Prints from the Shortell Collection
May 3 – June 2, 2013
Michael Shortell has been collecting for nearly forty years and in that time, has amassed a significant collection of prints. Among the works which he has selected
for this show are some of his personal favorites as well as works which lend themselves to discussion about print collecting for the average person.
According to Mr. Shortell, his collection has been amassed from a variety of sources including thrift stores, antique shops, tag sales, flea markets and artists. Early in his collecting years, he realized that he would not be able to afford art at retail prices and instead, he chose to look for alternative sources for purchasing art.
Formerly the owner of a contemporary art gallery in Hartford, Michael Shortell has since founded Paper New England (www.papernewengland.org), a non-profit venue which aims to provide people with opportunities to study and view works of art on paper produced by New England artists.
Michael Shortell’s collection will not be for sale at the gallery.
