Jen Simms – Curated by Harriet Caldwell
East Gallery | September 20 – October 20, 2013
Jen Simms is a practicing artist living and working in Western
Massachusetts. She works in a variety of media including watercolor, drawing, collage and mixed media installation. Her primary influences originate within her immediate environment, including the physical landscape, and the rhythms and detritus of daily life.
For the past twenty years, Jen Simms’s studio practice has revolved around the complex balancing act inherent in our contemporary lives. At times she steps back and metaphorically organizes all the parts into a greater whole, a larger form symbolic of the essence of the everyday.
At other times, she draws from the everyday experience to extract small gestures, formalized actions and emotional fragments in order to emphasize brief, poetic moments that influence the connections within us and between one another.
