TORRINGTON >> Five Points Gallery announces a new public art project – Torrington Yarn Bombing — which will be on view in Downtown Torrington in the summer of 2016. Torrington Yarn Bombing is supported in part by the Northwest Connecticut Arts Council and the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development Partners. Partners in this project are: the City of Torrington, In Sheep’s Clothing, NW CT Chamber of Commerce, Kids Play Museum and VLC Images.

Yarn bombing is a form of temporary street art where yarn in any form (knit, crochet, latch hook, cross stitch, braided, wrapped) is attached to an object in a public space. Public art of this type first appeared in the United States about ten years ago and within the last decade, has become increasingly popular and has spread worldwide.

Five Points Gallery, working with its partners, invites people from northwestern Connecticut of all ages and skills to participate. Men and women, boys and girls, all ages – from school children to seniors – are welcome to participate. All levels are welcome, from beginner through expert and classes will be available for beginners. Individuals may participate on their own but teams are also encouraged and businesses and organizations can also take part in this public art project.

Participants may work in the comfort of home or participate in one of the many yarn bombing gatherings which will be organized throughout the area. Each individual, team, businesses or organizations will be assigned a site in the downtown Torrington area. Team challenges are encouraged.

The planned installation date (weather permitting) is June 11, 2016. The various creations will be installed in Downtown Torrington along Main Street, from the Torrington Historical Society to Coe Park; along Water Street; and on Franklin Street. The yarn bombing project plans to be deinstalled in September 2016.
However, work on the Yarn Bombing Project is starting now.

Interested in participating? If so, we invite you to attend one of the informational sessions which will be held at Five Points Gallery on the following dates: Saturday Nov. 14 at 2 pm or Sunday, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. Dates for design workshops, beginner classes and “yarn-ins” will be announced in the near future.
