This menagerie of elements – color negative film\, lensless cameras\, Pinhole lenses\, all come together to form these very personal images. Brown goes on to state\, “And to further push this imagery into the public perceptions as a national debate\, we need to address the growing ease of gun violence\, disparity of wealth and race throughout this country.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Matin Malikazada - Five Points Annex
DESCRIPTION:Five Points Annex Gallery presents Matin Malikzada Pottery!\nThis show will be up from December 9 to 18\, 2022\nOpen hours are Saturdays 12-4 PM and by appointment.\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n MALIKZADA POTTERY\n\n\nMalikzada Pottery is informed and inspired by the ancient techniques handed down through the centuries and now expertly and lovingly realized by seventh-generation Afghan master potter\, Matin Malikzada\, a humanitarian refugee recently resettled in the US.  This work is functional as well as decorative\, simple yet elegant\, and glazed in hues that reflect the earth’s rich\, natural palette.  Each piece\, hand-crafted and signed by the artist (washing by hand recommended)\, is food and water safe.\nMatin Malikzada is internationally recognized for his technical skill and elegant designs. A native of Istalif\, Afghanistan\, once a vibrant center of ceramic art and commerce\, Matin was forced to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover. Along with his family\, he is now resettled in Northwest Connecticut where he continues his journey as an artist.\n\nIn Kabul\, Matin served as head of the Ceramics department at the Turquoise Mountain Institute\, an NGO founded by King Charles III\, where in his youth he studied and honed the skills inherited from his father. Upon graduating\, he was hired as a Master of Ceramics\, and ultimately rose to lead the department.Matin revitalized a nearly lost art of symmetrical design and turquoise glaze derived from natural pigments unique to Istalifi pottery and has trained over one hundred artisans in these ancient techniques.\nIn addition to holding a bachelor’s degree in Law from Tabesh University in Kabul\, he has earned Certificates in Design and Crafts from the City and Guilds Institute of London\, been a visiting artist at the Institute of Ceramic Studies at Shigaraki\, Japan\, and authored books on Istalifi Pottery.\nAs a practicing artist for nearly twenty years\, Matin has exhibited his work and demonstrated his skill to heads of state\, dignitaries\, artists\, educators\, as well as museum- and gallery-goers around the world.

SUMMARY:Victor Leger - Skyscapes - Five Points Gallery
DESCRIPTION:East Gallery – Solo Exhibition \nVictor Leger is a realist painter whose Plein-air paintings capture the contrast between deep space and the high detail of the environment. His intention is to express with obsessive accuracy the natural beauty of our surroundings. Leger states “through my work I hope to capture and convey the sense of overwhelming enchantment that these moments produce\, sometimes with philosophical ruminations.” \n  \nArtist Statement: \nAs a painter\, I am intuitively interested in the interaction of light with the environment. It is my intention to express with obsessive accuracy the natural beauty found\, at times only for a fleeting moment\, in our surroundings. Through my work\, I hope to capture and convey the sense of overwhelming enchantment that these moments produce\, sometimes with philosophical ruminations. If the viewer can sense the quality of natural beauty that enhances our lives then I will have succeeded in my efforts as an artist. Peace.

SUMMARY:Nature Triumphs - Five Points Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Nature Triumphs is a group exhibition that features a range of styles and mediums and is based on human interactions within the environment and how people interact with and ultimately manipulate\, interfere with\, or alter nature. Featuring artists Leora Armstrong\, Aaron Borkowski\, Loren Eiferman\, Lisa Kellner & Scott Schuldt. \n  \nLeora Armstrong is an interdisciplinary artist whose mixed media works depict ice erasure\, a consequence of human interactions on the environment. This multi-paneled installation of cyanotype on silk creates a sensorial experience of place. Armstrong navigates this fragility of place embracing the erasures\, marks\, rhythms\, and movement in both the physical experience as well as the sounds and solitude of the place. \n  \nAaron Borkowski\, although new to artmaking\, Borkowski has been surrounded by the arts his entire life. His abstract photography uses digital manipulations to duplicate and manipulate or alter the viewer’s perception of the natural world – creating repeated kaleidoscope-like patterns. The viewer begins to analyze the images dissecting the familiarity of the animate and inanimate objects he photographs. \n  \nLoren Eiferman’s sculptures portray the impact humans have had on the ecosystem. Building sculptures made from manipulated wood scraps and branches\, Eiferman constructs whimsical botanical forms that would appear to have been naturally grown. Her work also speaks to the primal desire to touch nature. In her series Nature Will Heal\, Eiferman collects detritus found in the environment to create “seeds” of a yet-to-exist plant form; repurposing and transforming what was once waste into a new flowering structure. \n  \nLisa Kellner explores the reluctant yet habitual collaboration of humans and nature. Her large oil paintings reflect on perceptions of space\, not only its physical attributes but also its memories. Paired with small sculptures created out of paint and collected detritus\, the work references nature in its current state: bold\, untamed\, and embedded with human interactions and interventions. \n  \nScott Schuldt is a multidisciplinary artist working with a wide variety of themes including the environment and natural sciences. Intricately hand-beaded and hand-sewn\, the works in this exhibition document the environment and intellectually and emotionally explore the idea of wilderness and mankind’s often counter-productive relationship with nature.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: In Dialogue\, She Spoke Up & Armed\, Alarmed
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, May 13\, 2022 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM\n  \nEAST GALLERY \nMargaret Roelke’s work explores sensationalism\, consumerism\, contradictions and the relationships that develop when popular culture mixes with war and religion. The exhibition Armed\, Alarmed is composed of two bodies of work that call for dialogue in urgent response to these concerns. Living near Sandy Hook Elementary School\, the site of a 2012 mass shooting\, Roelke was inspired to create sculptures made out of shotgun shells to raise awareness of gun violence and gun control. Roelke’s cyanotype images in this exhibition are attributed to the violent insurrection at the nation’s capital and the subject of peaceful versus violent protest. A percentage of all Margaret Roelke’s sales will be donated to organizations that work for gun control. \n  \nTDP GALLERY \nLinda Pearlman Karlsberg’s charcoaldrawings of famous women from throughout history acknowledge their contributions to society and encourage the viewer to contemplate a brighter future for all women. Each portrait is paired with a bird; birds symbolize freedom\, expansiveness\, keen vision\, and spirituality. Linda found their symbolism often uncannily mirrored the characteristics of each woman. \n  \nWEST GALLERY \nThe group exhibition In Dialogue features a spectrum of social justice issues such as economics\, politics\, gun and war violence. Participating artists include Jacob Cullers\, Jason Montgomery and Rita Valley \n Jacob Cullers \nThe imagery in Cullers’ mixed media paintings and sculpture refer to acts of violence that have occurred in America by white males. Using color to try to match the violence seems virtually impossible so Cullers often cuts into the paintings to try to convey the trauma. The artist’s use of found materials\, recognizable images and paint encourages the viewer to consider these issues in ways words alone cannot do.  Cullers’ states “I want to show the surface as a symbol of the history and the brutality of the American white male\, through the scope of conceptual painting.”  Cullers served in the United States Air Force and is an Iraq war veteran. \nJason Montgomery \nMontgomery’s work in this series he titled [de]RANGE seeks to draw attention to gun violence during the month of June 2021. These collaged based works act to engage and highlight the facts and potential solutions to the gun violence epidemic in the US. As an artist\, gun owner and a survivor of gun violence JRM fully recognizes the complexity of the issue and how deeply rooted it is in our culture. His writing and visual art bridge the aesthetics and feel of the early cubist collage movement and the Russian abstract movement of the 1920s. \nRita Valley \nValley is a textile-based artist whose work is fueled by her fascination with politics and social issues. Valley hand sews and embroiders bold statements dealing with issues of economics\, income disparity\, body image\, politics. The physical expression and labor in these pieces refer back to “women’s work” even as her subject matter addresses current topics that affect us all.  Bob Keating often collaborates with Valley by designing and forging hardware and accents for her finished work. \n  \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday\, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.\, and by appointment (860-618-7222). \n  \nThere is no admission charge. \nAll artwork is for sale. \nFive Points exhibitions and educational events are free and open to the public. \nFive Points Respects your masking preferences per CDC guidelines.

SUMMARY:Real and Imagined
DESCRIPTION:Five Points Gallery\, located at 33 Main St. in downtown Torrington\, presents Real & Imagined\, an exhibition in the West and TDP Galleries\, featuring five artists from across the state and region. \n  \nWhen: February 18\,  – March 26\, 2022  \nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 18\, 5:00 – 8:00p.m.  \n  \nReal & Imagined explores dualities in the relationships of patterns and colors from the natural and imagined worlds. \nTamara Dimitri’s work speaks to the variations of the environments she’s lived in throughout her life. Drawing from the history of these regions\, she creates organic branch-like sculptures maintaining an awareness of the human footprint on our land\, water systems\, and atmosphere. She combines traditional and recycled materials such as old texts from geology books and wire. Her work reflects a new world\, created from pieces of our own. \nNancy Hayes\, of South Dartmouth\, Mass. creates intricately painted worlds of an imagined location\, speaking to how her brain organizes space\, pattern\, color\, and form. She depicts highly organized ecosystems where each part is dependent on the whole while going deeper into its texture and biology. \nSusan Sharp’s assemblage series is composed of interconnected panels of different sizes\, color and in some cases different depths and shapes. Exploring Duality\, themes are organic and geometric. Colors are intense and mute\, pieces are large and small; all exist in a world that is constantly adjusting and moving.  \nLisa Warren’s Galaxy Garden paintings combine elements both abstract and representational. She creates elements of swirling pattern\, texture\, and color and her use of shapes or color in different dots and dashes emphasizes the emotional communication we all encounter in our own heads when exploring the world and our relationships –  as if seeing a garden within a galaxy. \nJoan Wheeler creates a conversation about the world that we live in and the relationship between humans and their environments throughout history and today. Featuring a focus on flora and fauna\, the undeniable blending of humans and nature can be found in her textile work. \n

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Pamela Stockamore\, Scott Richter & Sydney Morris
DESCRIPTION:Five Points Gallery\, located at 33 Main St. in downtown Torrington\, will exhibit three solo exhibitions. In the West Gallery\, Pamela Stockamore’s “A Retrospective”\, explores the pigment-based work of the late artist’s career. The East Gallery will feature mixed media works by Scott Richter\, in his exhibition “A Melody of Things Unrelated”. Sydney Morris’ solo exhibition “Nova”\, will exhibit her alternative process photographs in the TDP Gallery\, \nIn memory and honor of Pamela Stockamore (1952 – 2021)\, Five Points Gallery will exhibit various works from the artist’s vast career in a retrospective exhibition in the West Gallery. Stockamore work explores the relationship of Eastern and Western Philosophies: the delicate balance of opposites – entropy and order\, intuition and reason\, flux and permanence\, intangible and physical. These dualities seem fundamentally and mutually exclusive\, yet they complement one another and permeate every aspect of our lives and world. Stockamore’s unique approach to materials involved a centuries old method of working with pure mineral and earth pigments\, employing both traditional and contemporary means. By working with these materials she developed her signature style\, creating beautifully layered and textured surfaces balancing the aforementioned dualities. Stockamore is quoted as having said\, “ The paintings do not reflect a literal response to what has inspired me. Rather\, they are the embedded sense-memory of colors\, textures\, materials\, surfaces\, and the ephemeral quality of light\, which surrounds me on a daily basis. My paintings are an investigation into the effects of time and nature on all things\, a visual remembrance of countless transitory realities.” \nThe East Gallery will feature paintings and mixed media sculptural creations by artist Scott Richter. The exhibition “A Melody of Things Unrelated” groups works from multiple series emphasizing the artist’s layered and thoughtful approach to process. The Sculptural works within this show are actually considered to be paintings in the artist’s mind. They are pieces are about painting – the process and its material\, yet avoiding the final product and its related aesthetics. Each piece comments on the repetitive nature of the painting process – building mountains of \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\npaint showing the layers and history of the process. Richter’s two dimensional work also speaks to the methodology of process by layering\, burying and revealing surfaces. \nEmerging artist Sydney Morris employs various techniques of alternative process photography in her exhibition “Nova”. The alternative processed photos are printed on cloth and presented in embroidery hoops – as a metaphor for the stars in the night sky. Morris notes that these pieces are unique in the fact that they are ever changing. Much like a nova\, their colors may change\, be- come brighter\, or slowly fade over time. The forms created in these pieces mirror celestial events through photographic alchemy to produce fluid\, saturated pieces infused with meaning. \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. & Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.\, and by appointment (860-618-7222). There will be an in-person opening reception on Friday\, October 1\, 5:00 – 8:30pm. There will also be a Virtual Zoom Artist talk on Friday\, October 22\, 6:00PM. \nThere is no admission charge. All artwork is for sale. Five Points exhibitions and educational events are free and open to the public. Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear a mask and practice social distancing for their protection and that of others.

DESCRIPTION:West Gallery \nJohn Gintoff | Eleanor Sabin | Max Seinfeld | Kevin Van Aelst \n\n\n\n\nThe group exhibition\, It’s All About Process\, features work by artists John Gintoff\, Eleanor Sabin\, Max Seinfeld & Kevin Van Aelst. Although their concepts and visions are different\, each of the artists in this exhibition present a unique approach to process and alternative use of media and compositional elements. Photography is often a straightforward and traditional way to capture how we experience moments; however\, John Gintoff challenges how the viewer perceives traditional photography by using photographic prints to create three-dimensional sculptural forms. Kevin Van Aelst also plays with a reimagining of traditional photography. His layered digital process deals with the malleability of our notions of truth and memory. Van Aelst states\, “The work aims to examine the relationship between photography\, reality and memory and is a contemplation of memory itself”. Eleanor Sabin’s work explores the conflicts between the man-made and natural world. Her process of creating layered detailed pen and ink drawings of the natural world are then disrupted by saturated airbrushed color\, bold geometric patterns and lines creating new tensions of space. Max Seinfeld’s sculptures also play with tensions through contrasting materials\, color and form. His small sculptures’ interplay of solid vs. seemingly liquid forms allows for a sensation of a lingering touch or inching grip. The interaction of natural and artificial colors in Seinfeld work are drawn from observations in contemporary media\, such as the allure of a red Cadillac versus the natural colors of the raw materials. \n  \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Two Stories | Erin Koch Smith
DESCRIPTION:East Gallery \nErin Koch Smith’s exhibition\, Two Stories\, draws from two bodies of work that utilize imaginative narratives and stories to build a language for experience that cannot be expressed in a different way. One narrative features the imaginary heroics of a lamp trapped inside a psychological landscape built out of memories\, which is based on Philip Guston’s 1974 painting\, “Lamp”. The wildly whimsical paintings create new logics and narratives using the physicality of the paint as part of the storytelling process. Smith states she is\, “interested in the ways words can fail\, and how painting and drawing can fill the gap.” In her other works on exhibit\, Smith searches for form within her compositions using memories and representations of her childhood emphasizing personal wants and desires. The paintings can also be seen to reflect fears of growing older\, the cloudiness of middle life and the pressures of creating a home.

SUMMARY:It's Today | Will Holub
DESCRIPTION:TDP Gallery \n\n\n\n\nWill Holub’s exhibition\, It’s Today\, explores issues of chance and recognition with textural abstract paintings that have fragmented photographic imagery randomly arrayed across their surfaces. Made using a variety of approaches\, and with materials such as card stock\, C- prints and transfer images\, they address not only the consequences of image fracturing\, but also provide encouraging evidence of the strengthening aspects of reconstruction. \nAfter three decades of experimentation with the tactile properties of paper as a low-relief material on the surfaces of his paintings\, Holub continues to investigate how and why haptic art first establishes a “felt\,” rather than a simply “seen\,” connection with viewers. \nWill Holub was the winner of the 2020 Five Points Small Works exhibition juried by Power Boothe. \n\n\n\n\n  \n
