SUMMARY:Thoughts and Prayers Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Thoughts and Prayers”\, a collaborative outdoor installation by Martha Lewis and Margaret Roleke is now on display on the grounds at Five Points Arts Center. This piece made its debut in the fall of 2022 on Governor’s Island\, NYC; Margaret & Martha’s goal is to have Thoughts & Prayers tour the country\, to help incite better conversations about our collective relationship to weapons and violence in the United States. \nThe large\, cruciform structure was built by Roleke who painstakingly threaded\, then wrapped dozens of used shotgun shells around the armature\, to create a colorful\, texturally rich take on the Christian cross. The prayer flags were made by Lewis\, using crowd-sourced tee shirts hand-cut and stenciled with her custom messages. Every flag contains human DNA\, signs of wear\, and a past as the covering on a human torso. They act as fluttering surrogates\, protesting and bearing witness to each weaponized incident. Similarly\, Roleke’s shells\, sourced from various rifle ranges\, bear the marks of human touch and interaction – they are often bent and misshapen by use. Like Lewis’ flags\, they appear in a candy-colored array\, giving the work a polychromatic\, full-spectrum presence\, further evoking the vivid diversity of us\, here in the USA. \nAccompanying the installation is a site\, located in an adjacent tree stump\, where the public can share their own messages about gun control and gun violence. These may be added to future iterations of the project\, shifting the voice of the project to a collective chorus. \n  \nMargaret Roleke is a sculptor and mixed media artist based in Easton\, CT.\, and Brooklyn. Much of her work deals with important social issues including gun violence. She currently has several large-scale outdoor sculptures on view in New England including The Norwalk Art Space\, The Camp Gallery in Westport\, and at AirPort in Kingston\, NY. Roleke’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums. Find out more at www.margaretroleke.com and follow her on Instagram at @margaretroleke \nMartha Willette Lewis is a visual artist whose practice intersects science\, technology\, history\, and human knowledge. Her recent projects tackle such topics as Quantum Physics\, The Climate Crisis\, Politics\, Misogyny\, and Memory. Lewis’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums in the USA and Europe. Lewis has artwork on paper at Central Booking Gallery\, Planthouse Gallery\, and the Pierogi Flatfile\, all in New York. SUMMARY:Resilience: Honoring those lost\, those murdered\, and those who still search
DESCRIPTION:The installation explores the root causes of the MMIW epidemic. Through spreading awareness the artist promotes actionable change. According to the Urban Health Institute\, 5\,712 cases of MMIW were reported in 2016\, of these\, only 116 were logged into the Department of Justice Database. Dante Biss-Grayson\, in this ongoing installation honors those lost\, those missing\, and those murdered. The work is a live creation which will include\, open discussions\, poetry creation\, art creation\, new media\, and virtual activism via social media platforms. The live creation will shout to the wind\, a stone in the lake\, a way to send a signal to the world that this issue is impacting us and that we must provide action. By creating art\, and externalizing the emotions felt\, the artist intends to bring greater awareness to this issue\, and inspire action. \n  \nSpace is limited for the in-person event; pre-registration is recommended. \n  \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Rhapsody in June
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: https://waterburysymphony.secure.force.com/ticket/PatronTicket__PublicTicketApp#/ \nWaterbury Symphony Orchestra presents Rhapsody in June\, Saturday\, June 12\, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at the Waterbury Arts Magnet School Courtyard\, and Sunday\, June 13\, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. on the lawn at Five Points Center for the Visual Arts in Torrington. \nThe concert will feature some of Ellington’s most loved works including :  It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing) and Jubilee Stomp and\, of course\, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue will be a centerpiece of the concert. This program underscores the WSO’s long history in the Waterbury community. On March 26\, 1963\, Duke Ellington was the piano soloist with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra in a performance of New World A-Comin’\, a landmark jazz score composed by Ellington. “I’m very excited about our salute to the music of Ellington and Gershwin.  This concert is at the heart of the WSO’s history and mission\, to use music as a bridge to connect audiences from different generations and diverse communities. We believe it is an opportunity to foster shared musical experiences and build community. It is the first in what we hope will be an ongoing series celebrating jazz\, Latin music\, and the rich legacy of the Great American Songbook\,” says WSO Music Director & Conductor Leif Bjaland. \nThe concert will showcase more than twenty WSO musicians and will feature three guest artists. Internationally renowned pianist Andrew Armstrong will be the featured soloist for Rhapsody in Blue. Both vocalist\, Maria Wirries and pianist\, Alex Rybeck have performed with the Symphony’s Great American Songbook Project\, an annual weekend-long workshop\, for talented young singers to be coached in songs from the 1920s\, 30s\, 40s\, and 50’s\, collectively known as “The Great American Songbook.” \nThe weekend expands the Waterbury Symphony’s community partnerships\, as well. “Collaborating with Waterbury Arts Magnet School to perform in their spectacular courtyard and with Five Points Center for the Visual Arts to perform in their brand-new Torrington center is an exciting way to connect with different areas in our community\,” explains Bjaland. Judith McElhone\, Executive Director & Founder of Five Points Arts\, agrees\, “All of us at Five Points Arts are delighted to partner with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra on the presentation of Rhapsody in June. We believe the intersection of visual art and music is important for healing and hope in today’s world\, and we celebrate this new partnership with WSO as the perfect vehicle for bringing our collective audiences together in new and exciting ways.” Nicholas Albini\, Waterbury Arts Magnet School Principal sums up the region-wide enthusiasm for this event\, “It is with the utmost joy and satisfaction that Waterbury Public Schools\, Waterbury Arts Magnet School\, and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra have a community partnership that benefits so many young adults and enjoyed by music enthusiasts throughout the region. This relationship is cemented and will remain in place for as long as music is taught\, learned\, and appreciated. Feel the vibe!” \nThis event is Waterbury Symphony’s gift to the community. Admission is FREE but tickets are REQUIRED. A suggested donation of $25 per person will be gratefully accepted. Tickets are available at waterburysymphony.org or 203-574-4283. In the event of inclement weather on either date\, the concert will move to indoor facilities at each site. \nThe WSO has developed concert guidelines in accordance with the CT Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) so that everyone can relax and enjoy the music. Capacity is limited and these concerts are expected to sell out. Attendees will be required to wear masks. \nThese concerts are sponsored by:
Presenting Sponsor: Norman S. Drubner
Concert Sponsors: Frank Monteiro and the Connecticut Community Foundation
Artist Sponsors: A.M.
