SUMMARY:Wood Relief Sculpture with David Holzman
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Information\nInstructor: David Holzman \nDates: Tuesdays\, October 19 – November 16 \nTime: 10 AM – 1 PM \nLocation: Five Points Arts Center Room 127 \nAges: 18+ \nClass Cap: 8 \nCost: $250 \n  \nEvent Link:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/wood-relief-sculpture-tickets-166831957877?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \n  \nWorkshop Description\nThis workshop offers a guide to developing a personal approach to wood relief sculpture. The focus is on relief carving as a versatile art making activity parallel to painting\, printmaking and sculpture. Participants will be able to work up a project using basic relief carving techniques. Tools provided. Safety procedures will be followed. Basswood will be available at cost. Emphasis will be placed on participants’ choice of approach: relief sculpture in a pictorial format; deep relief; relief in free-standing sculpture and architectural settings. All levels welcome. Participants should bring a sketchbook of ideas. \n  \nInstructor Bio\nDavid Holzman has recently retired from public school teaching after 34 years with the Simsbury Public Schools. Holzman continues to teach Design at CCSU. Having studied at Hartford Art School and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Holzman developed a studio practice that integrates painting\, printmaking and sculpture in a converted garage near the banks of the Farmington river in Avon\, CT\, where he and his wife raised a family.. He began to make wood relief carvings more than 30 years ago\, while continuing his involvement with the woodcut novel format. His work was published in Art Spiegelman’s RAW comics anthology as well as Zero Zero from Seattle and he was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. In his current work of the last ten years known as The Book of Umm\, Holzman seeks to revitalize the surrealist practice of automatic drawing as a wellspring of visual energy. Simultaneously\, he has imagined a monumental approach to carved relief sculpture that deploys the automatic process to the spontaneous fabrication of imagery.

SUMMARY:The Portrait in Pastel with Brandon Brownlee
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Information\nInstructor: Brandon Brownlee \nDates: Fridays\, from October 22 – November 19 \nTime: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM \nLocation: Five Points Arts Center Painting Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $250 \nClass Cap: 12 \n  \nEvent Link\nhttps://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fivepointsarts/event.jsp?event=23& \n  \nWorkshop Description\nIn this workshop you will learn how to develop a finished pastel portrait. Starting with a charcoal under drawing\, we will be layering hard and soft pastels to create depth and nuanced flesh tones. We will also be touching on the structural anatomy of the skull and facial features in order to build a life-like portrait. This class is for both beginner and advanced students. We will be working from photo references; please bring a variety of photos to work from. \n  \nRequired Materials\nPlease click here for the materials list. \nPencils: \n\nCharcoal pencils (soft – hard)\n(optional) Pastel pencils\n(optional) Colored pencils\n\nPaper (bring a few smaller 9×12 sheets\, and 1-2 larger sheets if you would like to work life-sized or larger). Suggested papers: \n\nSketchpad (9×12 or larger)\nCanson Mi-Teintes (don’t get anything too light) (midtone and darker – blue/green/grey/purple are good for fleshtones)\nCold-press watercolor paper (can be toned with acrylic or watercolor\, or a painted with a pastel ground)\nSennelier La Carte Pastel Paper\nArt Spectrum Colourfix Sanded Paper (get anything 9×12 or larger)\n\nChalk Pastels. If buying pastels individually\, make sure to not only get bright saturated colors but warm and cool neutrals. Suggested chalk pastels: \n\nHard Pastels: Nupastels (get largest box you can afford)\nSoft Pastels: Faber Castell (box set\, comes in half or full); Sennelier Soft Pastel (half sticks or full sticks); Rembrandt\n\nDrawing Board (has to be larger than the paper that you are working with). A full sheet of Art Spectrum Colorfix is 19.5”x27.5” – make sure to give yourself a few inches to work on either side for adhering the paper to the board. You can buy a drawing board from the art store\, or you can also get a hardboard or MDF (smooth) from a hardware store and have them cut it to size. \nAdditional supplies: \n\nTools for sharpening pastel pencils/hard pastels/etc (optional but very helpful)\nPastel pencil sharpener (carbothello makes a really cheap one that works great)\nExacto knife/Olfa (my preference)\nSandpaper (120 grit) for pencils)\nArtist tape\nRag or chamois (I use a square of old shirt – cheap and you can bring several)\n\n  \nInstructor Bio\nBrandon Brownlee is an artist living and working in Hartford\, Connecticut. He completed an MFA in painting at New York Academy of Art\, where he studied figure drawing under Michael Grimaldi and advanced artistic anatomy at Drexel University College of Medicine. SUMMARY:Layered Woodcut Workshop with Jim Lee
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Information\nDates: Saturdays\, October 23 – November 6 \nTime: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM \nLocation: Five Points Arts Center Print Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $400 \nClass Cap: 8 \n  \nEvent Link: \nhttps://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fivepointsarts/event.jsp?event=26& \n  \nWorkshop Description\nThis course will examine the bold and direct capabilities of woodcut and other relief print surfaces. It will take the student from preliminary sketches to the carving of blocks\, using the multiple block technique. By printing multiple layers of transparent inks\, images will develop with lush color relationships and luminous surfaces. We will work with color separation/registration\, carving with hand and power tools\, built-up surfaces\, color ink mixing\, and stencils. Monotype techniques will also be introduced and can be combined with the carved blocks. During the workshop students first develop a key block\, transfer the image to other blocks to carry various colors and then print small editions\, exploring color variations. Students should plan to arrive with several worked out compositions\, either representational or abstract. \nStudents do not need to have previous printmaking experience\, but this would certainly be an advantage. I can adapt this to any level of experience. \n  \nRequired Materials\nSee link here. \n  \nInstructor Bio\nJim Lee was born in Kansas and received a M.F.A. in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980. He taught printmaking\, drawing and book arts at the Hartford Art School/University of Hartford\, West Hartford\, CT from 1982 -2020.  \nLandscape is at the core of his work. He often begins a series with on-site drawings and watercolors\, and from these develops his color reduction woodcut prints. Recent work has been based on the west coast of Ireland\, Maine and Maritime Canada.  \n  \nA selection of Jim Lee’s recent exhibitions include:\n\nSolo: University of Alaska\, Anchorage\, AK-2019; Bromer Gallery\, Boston\, MA-2019; University of Wisconsin-Madison\, WI-2019; Five Points Gallery\, Torrington\, CT-2014; Group: Atlanta Print Biennial International Juried Exhibition\, Atlanta\, GA-2017; The Boston Printmakers International Biennial-2017; Imprint One\, National Invitational Print Exhibition\, Austin\, TX-2016; Stand Out Prints\, International Juried Print Exhibition\, Minneapolis\, MN\, 2016; Yinchuan Conversation: Chinese & American Printmakers\, Yinchuan Art Center\, Ningxia\, China-2016; IPCNY New Prints/Summer Show\, NY- 2014.  \nHis collections include: The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, The National Portrait Gallery\, The Getty Art Center\, The Wadsworth Athenaeum\, The Art Institute of Chicago\, The Museum of Fine Arts-Boston\, The Guangdong Museum of Fine Arts-Chongqing\, China\, The New York Public Library\, University of San Francisco\, and Bibliotheca Liborium Artificem\, Sydney\, Australia.
