SUMMARY:DRAWING FROM NATURE / EXPLORATION AND EXPRESSION
DESCRIPTION:Instructor Name: Kait Lennon\n\nDate: July 23\, 2022 \nTime: 10:00 – 2:00 \nWorkshop Description \nThis workshop will have us reconnecting with nature and ourselves\, to slow down\, focus and observe. Venturing outside\, we’ll pull inspiration from the landscape around us. Whether you feel a strong connection to a particular plant\, the dance of the leaves in the breeze\, or the way the light hits at golden hour. Run with what sparks your interest and start sketching. \nWe will begin by following our own personal compass as we explore the landscape that surrounds the FPAC. Participants will be asked to pay attention\, look around\, and notice what they notice. Kait will work with each participant as they take notes on what they are seeing and experiencing. After the initial guided walk\, work can be made either inside the Art Center or in its beautiful natural surroundings. \nRequired Materials \nSomething to draw with and on\, your preference! Maybe a sketchbook to make some thumbnails on our walk \nClick here to register: https://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fivepointsarts/event.jsp?event=423&

SUMMARY:SALT PRINT PHOTOGRAMS
DESCRIPTION:Instructor Name: Luther Gerlach \nDate: July 16\, 2022 \nTime: 10:00 – 4:00 \nInvented by Henry Fox Talbot in the early 1830s\, salt prints are the earliest photographs on paper. For contemporary students\, this is a fun\, relatively easy process to make images. You’ll come away with an intimate understanding of the origins of photography\, the building blocks of photographic printmaking\, and non-camera image-making. With the pure interaction of light and chemistry\, we’ll create images you might find in a Talbot book: feathers\, lace\, and botanicals. \nClick here to register: https://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fivepointsarts/event.jsp?event=422&

SUMMARY:COLLAGE: METHOD AND METAPHOR
DESCRIPTION:Instructor Name: Stephen Maine \nDate: July 9\, 2022 \nTime: 10:00 – 5:00 \nA truly democratic art form\, collage requires few technical skills\, yet its conceptual reach is boundless. Collage employs spatial disruption as an organizing principle\, its interplay of fragmentation and continuity accommodating and even celebrating contingencies of concept\, process\, and form. Suited to artists as well as graphic designers\, this workshop considers collage as both a pictorial strategy and a vehicle for communication. Experimentation is encouraged in physical and digital modes\, and special emphasis is given to the compositional behavior of color\, the fluidity of iconographic meaning\, and visual humor. \nClick here to register: https://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fivepointsarts/event.jsp?event=420&

SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk: Kasey Ramirez\, Balam Soto & Mary Anne McCarthy
DESCRIPTION:Join Five Points Gallery on Friday\, July 8th at 6:30 PM for this Virtual Artist Talk and learn more about the artists and artwork from two of our three current exhibitions.\nClick Here to Register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_aiUuKC_lRPm4CWqEzLE-XQ\nModerated by Matthew Best. \nKasey Ramirez’s drawings and prints explore the tension between stability and impermanence. Ramirez states\, “In my drawings and prints\, buildings become a stand-in for humans\, a metaphor for man-made efforts to create shelters that are ultimately vulnerable to environmental extremes.” Ramirez’s charcoal drawings depict skeletal structures which contain a sense of rise and collapse\, of construction and disintegration that mirrors the precarious state in which humans find themselves in the twenty-first century. \nBalam Soto and Mary Anne McCarthy are both inspired by the Greek word dendrites\, which refers to trees found in nature and also to neurons in the human brain that resemble trees; however\, their approaches to artmaking are vastly different. McCarthy’s intricate silverpoint drawings of nature and trees highlight the everlasting power of traditional artmaking. Soto’s interactive cube sculpture uses video\, light\, and the effect of active human presence to celebrate art’s ever-changing capacity to influence how we think about ourselves and the world around us. \nGene Gort will not join the Live conversation but a prerecorded interview will be featured at some point during the talk.

SUMMARY:Drawn To Code Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:TDP Gallery \nGene Gort – Drawn To Code \nGene Gort utilizes computer programming as a means to produce “drawings”. The images generated from computer code create animations\, data visualizations\, and digital prints. Gort writes\, “I am drawn to the concepts of interactivity\, repetition\, variability\, and unpredictability that the process allows.” The exhibition will feature both digital and printed drawings. In addition\, the exhibition includes an ongoing project titled Weather or Not: Current Conditions\, commissioned by Five Points Arts for permanent installation at the new Art Center and as an online web project. The project utilizes real time weather data collected from a weather tower located on the Art Center property\, which Gort reimagines into a live data visualization. The weather project was made possible by a grant from Thomaston Savings Bank. \nJune 24 – July 30\, 2022 \nGallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 11AM – 5PM & Sunday 1PM – 5PM

SUMMARY:MONOTYPES PRINTED BY HAND AND THEN ON THE PRESS
DESCRIPTION:Instructor Name: Tony Kirk \nDate: June 5\, 2022 \nTime: 10:00 – 2:00 \nThis workshop will focus on printing by hand using Japanese paper. Once the print is hand printed\, then we will take the plate to the press and print a strong “ghost” impression. Prendergast’s monotypes were small and printing by hand takes a little effort\, therefore you will make more prints if you keep your image small.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: In Dialogue\, She Spoke Up & Armed\, Alarmed
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Artist talk on Friday\, June 3\, 6:30 p.m.\, moderated by Matthew Best\nFive Points Gallery \n  \nFREE VIA ZOOM \nClick here to register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7dSCp_HJQMWf-JAFCEBQrA  \nModerator: Matthew Best  \nHartford\, CT-based artist Matthew Best received his BFA in Painting from the University Of Hartford Art School and his MFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts Amherst working primarily in oil paint. He has exhibited in numerous local\, national\, and international shows. Best has taught at various colleges and universities in CT\, MA & VA. \n  \nEAST GALLERY: \nMargaret Roelke’s work explores sensationalism\, consumerism\, contradictions and the relationships that develop when popular culture mixes with war and religion. The exhibition Armed\, Alarmed is composed of two bodies of work that call for dialogue in urgent response to these concerns. Living near Sandy Hook Elementary School\, the site of a 2012 mass shooting\, Roelke was inspired to create sculptures made out of shotgun shells to raise awareness of gun violence and gun control. Roelke’s cyanotype images in this exhibition are attributed to the violent insurrection at the nation’s capital and the subject of peaceful versus violent protest. A percentage of all Margaret Roelke’s sales will be donated to organizations that work for gun control. \n  \nTDP GALLERY: \nLinda Pearlman Karlsberg’s charcoal drawings celebrate exceptional women\, who have addressed inequities across society and wrought change through their work\, and encourage viewers to contemplate better possibilities for all our futures. Birds paired with each portrait symbolically embody their spirit. \n  \nWEST GALLERY: \nThe group exhibition In Dialogue features a spectrum of social justice issues such as economics\, politics\, gun and war violence. Participating artists include Jacob Cullers\, Jason Montgomery and Rita Valley \nJacob Cullers \nThe imagery in Cullers’ mixed media paintings and sculpture refer to acts of violence that have occurred in America by white males. Using color to try to match the violence seems virtually impossible so Cullers often cuts into the paintings to try to convey the trauma. The artist’s use of found materials\, recognizable images and paint encourages the viewer to consider these issues in ways words alone cannot do.  Cullers’ states “I want to show the surface as a symbol of the history and the brutality of the American white male\, through the scope of conceptual painting.”  Cullers served in the United States Air Force and is an Iraq war veteran. \nJason Montgomery \nMontgomery’s work in this series he titled [de]RANGE seeks to draw attention to gun violence during the month of June 2021. These collaged based works act to engage and highlight the facts and potential solutions to the gun violence epidemic in the US. As an artist\, gun owner and a survivor of gun violence JRM fully recognizes the complexity of the issue and how deeply rooted it is in our culture. His writing and visual art bridge the aesthetics and feel of the early cubist collage movement and the Russian abstract movement of the 1920s. \nRita Valley \nValley is a textile-based artist whose work is fueled by her fascination with politics and social issues. Valley hand sews and embroiders bold statements dealing with issues of economics\, income disparity\, body image\, politics. The physical expression and labor in these pieces refer back to “women’s work” even as her subject matter addresses current topics that affect us all.  Bob Keating often collaborates with Valley by designing and forging hardware and accents for her finished work. \n  \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday\, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.\, and by appointment (860-618-7222).

SUMMARY:Layered Woodcut Workshop with Jim Lee
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Lee \nDates: Saturdays\, April 30 – May 14 \nTime: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nWorkshop Description \nThis course will examine the bold and direct capabilities of woodcut and other relief print surfaces. It will take the student from preliminary sketches to the carving of blocks\, using the multiple block technique. By printing multiple layers of transparent inks\, images will develop with lush color relationships and luminous surfaces. We will work with color separation/registration\, carving with hand and power tools\, built-up surfaces\, color ink mixing\, and stencils. Monotype techniques will also be introduced and can be combined with the carved blocks. During the workshop students first develop a key block\, transfer the image to other blocks to carry various colors and then print small editions\, exploring color variations. Students should plan to arrive with several worked out compositions\, either representational or abstract. \nStudents do not need to have previous printmaking experience.

SUMMARY:Cyanotype: Wet and Traditional with Jill Enfield
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Information \nDates: April 25-26 \nTime: 10AM – 6 PM \nLocation: Five Points Arts Center Photo Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $375 \nClass Cap: 8 \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nWorkshop Description \nOne of the early photographic processes\, invented in 1842 by Sir John Hirschel\, was the cyanotype.  It is based on sunlight causing a change in a light sensitive emulsion brushed onto paper or fabric.  Many of the early photographic images were called “sun prints” because they had to be exposed using UV lights\, or sunlight. This is a contact print process and you will need negatives the size you would like your final image to be.   \nWe will start with learning how to make digital negatives and move on to making cyanotypes on watercolor paper or fabric. We will also explore working with photogram materials to use with wet cyanotypes and then toning. Discussions will be on best images\, paper\, fabrics\, and differences in chemical dilutions as well as toners. \n  \nRequired Materials \nThe Art Center will provide all cyanotype chemistry. Materials participants should bring: \n\nGloves and an apron\nMask\nBrushes\nWatercolor papers. Recommended papers to try: Hahnemuhle Platinum Rag\, Arches Platine\, Fabriano Acquarelle\, Clear Print Drafting Vellum or Strathmore Artist Plate Finish Drawing paper\, Cranes Kid Finish #32\, Parchment Wove #44\, Cot 320\n\n  \nInstructor Bio \nJill Enfield is a fine art photographer\, educator\, curator and author and has been teaching photography for many years with a concentration on historical techniques and alternative processes. Her three books: Photo Imaging: A Complete Guide To Alternative Processes published by Amphoto\, and\, Jill Enfield’s Guide to Alternative Processes: Popular Historical and Contemporary Techniques (First and Second Editions)\, published by Focal Press\, are award winning books\, and used in schools all over the world.  The books include step-by-step instructions on a variety of techniques including: wet plate collodion\, dry plate modern tintypes\, platinum and palladium printing\, cyanotypes\, liquid emulsion\, albumen printing\, hand painting and more.  \nJill’s work has also been chosen to be on book covers about these techniques and in magazines. Jill has podcasts and videos that can be seen on YouTube and other areas of the web. She has shown her work throughout the USA and Europe and had a one-woman show in 6 galleries on Ellis Island called THE NEW AMERICANS. A 3-minute video about the installation and the glass house made of old windows and portraits of recent immigrants can be seen by clicking on this link. The show then traveled with the Glasshouse of Immigrants featured at Photoville in DUMBO\, NYC and the Annenberg Center in LA\, and is still traveling to many cities throughout the USA. Enfield is looking for a permanent home for the glasshouse. \nEnfield has been teaching at Parsons The New School of Design since the late 1980’s and at many workshops throughout the world. Her fine art images can be seen in many museums around the world as well as in private collections.
