SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk: Ellen Carey
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ricardo Reyes\, will be in conversation with Ellen Carey about her works featured in her ongoing exhibition at Five Points on Thursday\, August 24 at 6:30 PM. \nFree Registration Here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_5OZHs_qdTIWK_V2GUVyp1w \nAbout Ellen Carey:\nCarey’s abstract and minimal photography purposely challenges our culturally and historically prescribed expectations around the photograph and its picture signs. Using only light\, wherever and whatever it strikes. The work intentionally upends traditional methods of “rendering” a photographic image with unusual approaches and combinations. Employing high-impact pictures of her inventive techniques and innovative methods she uses the photogram method\, made without a camera\, it is created in the darkroom; in color\, with no light (except upon exposure). \nAbout Dr. Ricardo Reyes:\nReyes is the Director of Galleries and Curator of Collections at Lafayette College\, Easton\, PA; he also oversees the activities of the Williams Center Gallery\, Grossman Gallery\, Kirby Art Study Center\, and Art on Campus. \nDr. Reyes (Rico) is an artist\, curator\, and cultural theorist whose 30-year experience has focused on expanding the conversation around art-making and exhibitions to be more inclusive and equitable. His art employs the idioms of performance\, video\, and installation while addressing issues of ethnicity\, sexuality\, and global politics. His curating is focused on elevating the voices of BIPOC and Queer artists; contemporary art from diasporic Filipino communities; photography and cultural regeneration; and has curated exhibitions at the Orange County Museum of Art\, UCLA Fowler Museum; and SF MoMA Artist Gallery. \nRico received his BA in Sculpture from the University of California at Berkeley and his MFA in New Genres from UCLA\, his Executive MBA from Quantic School of Business and Technology\, and his Ph.D. from the Centre for Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths\, University of London.

SUMMARY:Thoughts and Prayers Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:“Thoughts and Prayers”\, a collaborative outdoor installation by Martha Lewis and Margaret Roleke is now on display on the grounds at Five Points Arts Center. This piece made its debut in the fall of 2022 on Governor’s Island\, NYC; Margaret & Martha’s goal is to have Thoughts & Prayers tour the country\, to help incite better conversations about our collective relationship to weapons and violence in the United States. \nThe large\, cruciform structure was built by Roleke who painstakingly threaded\, then wrapped dozens of used shotgun shells around the armature\, to create a colorful\, texturally rich take on the Christian cross. The prayer flags were made by Lewis\, using crowd-sourced tee shirts hand-cut and stenciled with her custom messages. Every flag contains human DNA\, signs of wear\, and a past as the covering on a human torso. They act as fluttering surrogates\, protesting and bearing witness to each weaponized incident. Similarly\, Roleke’s shells\, sourced from various rifle ranges\, bear the marks of human touch and interaction – they are often bent and misshapen by use. Like Lewis’ flags\, they appear in a candy-colored array\, giving the work a polychromatic\, full-spectrum presence\, further evoking the vivid diversity of us\, here in the USA. \nAccompanying the installation is a site\, located in an adjacent tree stump\, where the public can share their own messages about gun control and gun violence. These may be added to future iterations of the project\, shifting the voice of the project to a collective chorus. \n  \nMargaret Roleke is a sculptor and mixed media artist based in Easton\, CT.\, and Brooklyn. Much of her work deals with important social issues including gun violence. She currently has several large-scale outdoor sculptures on view in New England including The Norwalk Art Space\, The Camp Gallery in Westport\, and at AirPort in Kingston\, NY. Roleke’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums. Find out more at www.margaretroleke.com and follow her on Instagram at @margaretroleke \nMartha Willette Lewis is a visual artist whose practice intersects science\, technology\, history\, and human knowledge. Her recent projects tackle such topics as Quantum Physics\, The Climate Crisis\, Politics\, Misogyny\, and Memory. Lewis’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries and museums in the USA and Europe. Lewis has artwork on paper at Central Booking Gallery\, Planthouse Gallery\, and the Pierogi Flatfile\, all in New York. SUMMARY:Japanese Boro/Sashiko Embroidery
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Barbara Asher \nDate: Saturday\, August 5\, 2023 \nTime: 10AM – 2PM \nMember: $72.00 \nNon-Member: $80.00 \nAges: 15 and up \nThis workshop brings together the qualities of mindfulness and recycling. In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to the Japanese art of Boro/Sashiko. Translated\, boro means “scraps” and sashiko\, “little stabs.” \nThe Art of Boro/Sashiko\, currently a high fashion trend due to the conciousness of reducing waste\, was originally born out of the needs for recycling and frugality of the working class during the Edo period. The garment repair craft was comprised of piecing several layers of torn indigo fabrics in order to give them superior strength and utility. The stitching gave the garment strength and it’s distinctive look. Garments such as this were often passed down from generation to generation creating a living and enduring work of art. \nTO REGISTER: click here

SUMMARY:Photography Degree Zero: The Black Swans of Ellen Carey
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, August 4 from 4-6 PM\, in the Five Points Annex Gallery.\nFive Points Gallery\,  presents a special new exhibition featuring Ellen Carey\, (who was the winner of the 2022 Five Points Small Works Juried Exhibition\, curated by Douglas Hyland). The exhibition will be featured in the Five Points Annex from August 4 through August 26\, 2023. The artist chose this location to cut down on the light exposure on her unique positive and negative exposure photographs. Carey will be exhibiting a variety of works from multiple series including: Photography Degree Zero\, Struck by Light\, & Zerograms. \n  \nEllen Carey – Statement \n“How is this picture made?” followed by “What is this picture of?” are questions asked about my work.  The first addresses process and it is the very process which becomes the subject.  The second finds an image without a subject\, neither portrait\, still life\, or landscape.  My photography purposely challenges our culturally and historically prescribed expectations around the photograph and its picture signs.  The ‘what’ is in front of the lens as its “camera vision” is reversed.  I use only light\, wherever and whatever it strikes.  My work intentionally upends traditional methods of “rendering” a photographic image with unusual approaches and combinations.  This forces a break from the past\, freeing a picture from a hierarchy of things to be captured to a picture that is made. \nIn this context\, abstraction in photography and lens-based art presents a contradiction in terms\, and minimalism presents a further oxymoron.  Well developed in the 20th century in other areas – Abstract Expressionism\, Minimal and Conceptual Art – these tenets are incorporated into my art practice.  The American invention of Polaroid 20 x 24 (circa 1980) complements these breakthroughs in visual thinking with my discovery of the Pull in 1996\, producing a black conical loop\, a parabola\, seen in nature as the tip of a comet. \nA different kind of document\, it is abstract and minimal\, Polaroid instant technology and Polaroid color\, both a new kind of photograph and 20th-century process; it fits under my umbrella concept Photography Degree Zero (1996-2023).  Polaroid is used by many artists and photographers\, such as Ansel Adams\, Marie Cosindas\, Andy Warhol\, Chuck Close\, William Wegman\, and Mary Ellen Mark\, and widely recognized for expanding our picture culture.  I am also a “Polaroid artist” keeping the instant\, peel-apart\, one-of-a-kind negatives\, often exhibiting them with their positives.  Struck by Light (1988-2023) parallels my Polaroid work by investigating experiments that create abstract and minimal photograms\, a 19th-century cameraless method\, also unique. \nBriefly stated\, my work under these twin artistic practices often overlaps in a variety of ways with light and color\, highlighting experimental combinations.  The Polaroid Pulls are dramatic\, high-impact pictures of my inventive techniques and innovative methods.  Struck by Light uses the photogram\, made without a camera\, it is created in the darkroom; in color\, no light (zero again) is allowed to except upon exposure.  An emphatic and evolving commitment to experiments in color unifies both practices\, serving as a conceptual point of departure and leitmotif.  In my Dings & Shadows and the Caesura series\, the referent/object\, seen in traditional photograms\, is removed.  My newer work\, named Zerogram\, links to my Polaroid practice\, highlighting that nothing\, zero\, is between the paper and light.  Light is the indexical in all photography\, light is color\, seen in nature’s rainbow.  Color is an artist’s universe\, color theory — RGBYMC — photography’s planet\, a contextual reference in palette\, underscoring my concepts. \nThe end results include abstract and minimal work as Photography Degree Zero and Struck by Light\, freely interchanging concepts with the other\, from Polaroid and/or photogram\, with a wide variety in palette and form.  My work involves the discourse around contemporary photo-based artwork\, it stands as a testimony to minimalism and abstraction; process within photography; color as subject; forms\, and feelings. \n

SUMMARY:Drypoint Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Carol Wax \nDates: Saturday and Sunday\, July 29-30\, 2023 \nTimes: 10AM – 4PM \nMembers $225.00 \nNon- Members $250.00 \n\nThe goal of this workshop is to explore a wide range of linear\, tonal\, and textural effects\, possibly using an array of tools and drypoint techniques. Instruction is designed to meet varied artistic styles\, cover the basics for beginners\, and offer new approaches to drypoint that experienced printmakers may not have previously considered.  Individual needs and interests are addressed through one-on-one coaching on the most appropriate uses of these techniques for developing one’s visions. \nDrypoint encompasses a wide range of techniques for incising images directly on copper plates without the use of acid. The ability to work tonally and linearly\, using additive and deductive approaches\, makes drypoint one of the most spontaneous and versatile printmaking mediums.  In this workshop\, participants learn how to use scribes\, roulettes\, stipplers\, gravers\, and other metalsmithing tools to draw richly textured linear and nuanced tonal images. Uses of drypoint and carborundum for creating grounds that may be worked in the mezzotint manner are also covered. Individual attention gives beginners solid introduction\, helps experienced printmakers expand their approach to the medium\, and allows all participants to work at their own pace. \n\nTo Register: click here

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Five Points Launchpad Biennial
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception Friday\, July 21 from 6-8 PM\n\nWest & TDP Galleries – Launchpad Biennial\nDaniel Baird Miller\, Christian Crowley\, Casandra Cyr\, Kyrsten Lane\, Ethan Newman\, Sydney Samele\, and Megan Victoria. \nThe Five Points Launchpad was formed in partnership with the University of Hartford\, Hartford Art School in an answer to the growing needs of art school graduates\, and to encourage the cross-pollination of ideas. The Launchpad offers participants access to affordable shared studio spaces above Five Points Gallery\, free access to the Five Points Arts Center\, a serious arts community\, mentorships\, and exhibition opportunities.\n \nDaniel Baird-Miller \nUsing a variety of old cameras and film\, Dan creates alternatively processed photographs that combine cyanotype chemistry with hand-drawn details. Centered around his posthumous relationship with his father\, he layers together vague memories\, in an attempt to seek answers. \n  \nChristian Crowley \nCrowley’s large\, abstract\, and energetic mixed-media paintings combine color\, text\, and symbols in an intuitive\, unabashedly\, and thoughtful manner. When talking about his work he simply states\, “I am a vessel for creativity. I don’t like half-measures. I do not want art to be a part of my life… but my life to be a part of art.” \n  \nCasandra Cyr \nCasandra’s ominous pen and ink illustrations speak to the horror and fantasy enthusiast; creating a sense of fear and paranoia in both the subject and atmosphere of the drawings. Her eerie depictions of the fictional monster\, the “long-neck-man”\, are part of an ongoing graphic novel she is working on. \n\nKyrsten Lane \nKyrsten’s mixed media paintings incorporate bold saturated colors\, and organic line-work as a reflection of patterns she observes in nature. Using monochromatic palettes\, Lane’s use of color possesses a quality that can command attention or divert the gaze while her linework creates sculptural illusions. \n  \nEthan Newman \nEthan’s abstract expressionist paintings draw inspiration from his dreams and music influences. These layered gestural works oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Newman states\, “I’m interested in these glimpses\, and the feelings surrounding them\, and that is part of what I’m after in my creative process. In my attempt to re-create them\, however\, I often discover something completely new along the way.” \n  \nSydney Samele \nAs a printmaker\, Sydney works between drawing and intricately carved multiple woodblocks to create her prints. She is greatly inspired by mythologies from around the world. While the importance of mythology is not always clear\, these stories are rich in history\, culture\, and perspective. This series more specifically looks at flood mythos and transformations through water. \n\nMegan Victoria \nIn her ongoing Extraterrestrial Series\, Megan draws and paints chimera-like amalgamations that are inspired by the natural world\, including plants\, fungi\, animals\, and human anatomy. As the viewer draws their own narratives and questions around the origin of the figures\, one may wonder if they originate from reality or fantasy.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Peter Brown: Disguises - Put Up Your Hands
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, July 21 from 6-8 PM – Free and Open to the Public \nEast Gallery – Disguises: Put Up Your Hands \nPeter Brown \nThis series of Pinhole and flatbed scanner images portray perceptions /memories from a past personal traumatic episode in Peter’s life\, an armed home invasion. The characters and scenes depict notions of innocence\, violence\, anger\, dismay\, PTSD\, despair\, vengeance\, violation\, and justice. This menagerie of elements – color negative film\, lensless cameras\, Pinhole lenses\, all come together to form these very personal images. Brown goes on to state\, “And to further push this imagery into the public perceptions as a national debate\, we need to address the growing ease of gun violence\, disparity of wealth and race throughout this country.”
