The class begins with image composition through small studies and will move through refinement and developing a finished drawing. The instructor will conduct drawing demos in an accurate approach to blocking in\, composition\, separating light and shadow\, and developing form. Students will work from a series of still-lifes while receiving individualized feedback in a medium of their choice. All skill levels welcome. \n  \nRequired Materials\nPlease click here to download the materials list. \n\nVarious pencils (2H\, H\, HB\, 4B\, 6B) (having a wider range of lights and darks is helpful\, especially having a very dark dark)\n\n\n(optional) pencils – Blackwing 602\, Blackwing Pearl (low wax content – great for layering and making dark darks)\nKneaded eraser\nExacto blade/Olfa for sharpening pencils (olfa – preference)\nVine charcoal (for toning paper – can use watercolor or ink wash if preferred)\nRuler\nArtist Tape\nDrawing board larger than 24”x18” (can get a drawing board from any art store\, or a piece of gatorboard. Getting hardboard from a hardware store and having it cut down is also an option)\n24”x18” Drawing pad (Strathmore 400 series drawing pad – preferred)\n9”x12” sketchbook or sketchbook of choice\nHot Pressed watercolor paper (optional for finished drawing)\nAny other medium of your choice (i.e Oil Paints\, Pastels\, Charcoal\, Acrylic Paints)\n\n  \nInstructor Bio\nBrandon Brownlee is an artist living and working in Hartford\, Connecticut. He completed an MFA in painting at New York Academy of Art\, where he studied figure drawing under Michael Grimaldi and advanced artistic anatomy at Drexel University College of Medicine. He also holds a BFA in Illustration from the Hartford Art School and an AFA in Visual Fine Art from Manchester Community College. Brownlee’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in private collections in the United States.

The focus is on relief carving as a versatile art making activity parallel to painting\, printmaking and sculpture. Participants will be able to work up a project using basic relief carving techniques. Tools provided. Safety procedures will be followed. Basswood will be available at cost. Emphasis will be placed on participants’ choice of approach: relief sculpture in a pictorial format; deep relief; relief in free-standing sculpture and architectural settings. All levels welcome. Participants should bring a sketchbook of ideas. \n  \nInstructor Bio\nDavid Holzman has recently retired from public school teaching after 34 years with the Simsbury Public Schools. Holzman continues to teach Design at CCSU. Having studied at Hartford Art School and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, Holzman developed a studio practice that integrates painting\, printmaking and sculpture in a converted garage near the banks of the Farmington river in Avon\, CT\, where he and his wife raised a family.. He began to make wood relief carvings more than 30 years ago\, while continuing his involvement with the woodcut novel format. His work was published in Art Spiegelman’s RAW comics anthology as well as Zero Zero from Seattle and he was a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship. In his current work of the last ten years known as The Book of Umm\, Holzman seeks to revitalize the surrealist practice of automatic drawing as a wellspring of visual energy. Simultaneously\, he has imagined a monumental approach to carved relief sculpture that deploys the automatic process to the spontaneous fabrication of imagery.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Pamela Stockamore\, Scott Richter & Sydney Morris
DESCRIPTION:Five Points Gallery\, located at 33 Main St. in downtown Torrington\, will exhibit three solo exhibitions. In the West Gallery\, Pamela Stockamore’s “A Retrospective”\, explores the pigment-based work of the late artist’s career. The East Gallery will feature mixed media works by Scott Richter\, in his exhibition “A Melody of Things Unrelated”. Sydney Morris’ solo exhibition “Nova”\, will exhibit her alternative process photographs in the TDP Gallery\, \nIn memory and honor of Pamela Stockamore (1952 – 2021)\, Five Points Gallery will exhibit various works from the artist’s vast career in a retrospective exhibition in the West Gallery. Stockamore work explores the relationship of Eastern and Western Philosophies: the delicate balance of opposites – entropy and order\, intuition and reason\, flux and permanence\, intangible and physical. These dualities seem fundamentally and mutually exclusive\, yet they complement one another and permeate every aspect of our lives and world. Stockamore’s unique approach to materials involved a centuries old method of working with pure mineral and earth pigments\, employing both traditional and contemporary means. By working with these materials she developed her signature style\, creating beautifully layered and textured surfaces balancing the aforementioned dualities. Stockamore is quoted as having said\, “ The paintings do not reflect a literal response to what has inspired me. Rather\, they are the embedded sense-memory of colors\, textures\, materials\, surfaces\, and the ephemeral quality of light\, which surrounds me on a daily basis. My paintings are an investigation into the effects of time and nature on all things\, a visual remembrance of countless transitory realities.” \nThe East Gallery will feature paintings and mixed media sculptural creations by artist Scott Richter. The exhibition “A Melody of Things Unrelated” groups works from multiple series emphasizing the artist’s layered and thoughtful approach to process. The Sculptural works within this show are actually considered to be paintings in the artist’s mind. They are pieces are about painting – the process and its material\, yet avoiding the final product and its related aesthetics. Each piece comments on the repetitive nature of the painting process – building mountains of \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\npaint showing the layers and history of the process. Richter’s two dimensional work also speaks to the methodology of process by layering\, burying and revealing surfaces. \nEmerging artist Sydney Morris employs various techniques of alternative process photography in her exhibition “Nova”. The alternative processed photos are printed on cloth and presented in embroidery hoops – as a metaphor for the stars in the night sky. Morris notes that these pieces are unique in the fact that they are ever changing. Much like a nova\, their colors may change\, be- come brighter\, or slowly fade over time. The forms created in these pieces mirror celestial events through photographic alchemy to produce fluid\, saturated pieces infused with meaning. \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. & Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.\, and by appointment (860-618-7222). There will be an in-person opening reception on Friday\, October 1\, 5:00 – 8:30pm. There will also be a Virtual Zoom Artist talk on Friday\, October 22\, 6:00PM. \nThere is no admission charge. All artwork is for sale. Five Points exhibitions and educational events are free and open to the public. Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear a mask and practice social distancing for their protection and that of others.

DESCRIPTION:Remembering Ground Zero \nAugust 19th – September 25th\, 2021 \nOpening Reception: Friday\, August 20\, 6 pm \nVirtual Artist talk: Friday September 10\, 6:00PM \nFive Points Gallery\, 33 Main Street\, Torrington\, CT 06790 \n  \nRemembering Ground Zero: 20th Anniversary Show is a retrospective exhibition that remembers September 11th through paintings and art work that recall both the time before the towers’ fall—the halcyon days that documented a moment in time of clouds dancing across the sky over the city below in all its variations of form and light—and the collective shock and pain of the aftermath of the fall\, when the world tilted on its axis and a new sort of chaos emerged.  \n World Views\, a pilot artist residency program was launched by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) in 1997-98. Nineteen artists were selected by Graham Nickson\, Dean of the New York Studio School\, to make art in the north tower of the World Trade Center. Over the four years that preceded September 11\, 2001\, 130 artists of varied disciplines participated in the program. Each artist used their medium of choice to interpret and document the view of Manhattan with its ever changing weather\, light and patterns. \nI was a member of this extraordinary pilot program\, where I made art in a 10\,000-square-foot space on the 91st floor. When conceptualizing the show\, the first artist I contacted was a fellow studio mate\, Torild Stray\, at her home in Norway.  Not only did she agree to be in the show\, but she became my collaborator and co-curator of art work done by participants in the World Trade Center residency program\, as well as those who have made art about the fall of the Twin Towers or in response to 911 as a pivotal point in history from a broad world view.   \nIt has been over twenty years since the World Views artists\, from their perches on the upper floors of the majestic towers\, painted views from a perspective framed by windows on the world—a perspective that no longer exists. Through the lens of the windows of the World Trade Center we remember the time before and after 911. \nDon Bracken\, July 2021  \nArtists include: Don Bracken\, Susan Crile\, Charlotte Ghiorse\, Pamela Lawton Gwinn Loman\, Torild Stray \n“ Return of a View ” a short-documentary (12.44min) by Eivind Tolaas ( Norway) about a picture made in the Twin Towers 1997-98 will be showing in the gallery. \n  \nBracken and Stray will give ongoing tours of the exhibition the first weekend of the show and by appointment the following weeks. \nPlease contact the Gallery Director to set up a tour\, Karl Goulet kgoulet@fivepointarts.org

This program underscores the WSO’s long history in the Waterbury community. On March 26\, 1963\, Duke Ellington was the piano soloist with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra in a performance of New World A-Comin’\, a landmark jazz score composed by Ellington. “I’m very excited about our salute to the music of Ellington and Gershwin.  This concert is at the heart of the WSO’s history and mission\, to use music as a bridge to connect audiences from different generations and diverse communities. We believe it is an opportunity to foster shared musical experiences and build community. It is the first in what we hope will be an ongoing series celebrating jazz\, Latin music\, and the rich legacy of the Great American Songbook\,” says WSO Music Director & Conductor Leif Bjaland. \nThe concert will showcase more than twenty WSO musicians and will feature three guest artists. Internationally renowned pianist Andrew Armstrong will be the featured soloist for Rhapsody in Blue. Both vocalist\, Maria Wirries and pianist\, Alex Rybeck have performed with the Symphony’s Great American Songbook Project\, an annual weekend-long workshop\, for talented young singers to be coached in songs from the 1920s\, 30s\, 40s\, and 50’s\, collectively known as “The Great American Songbook.” \nThe weekend expands the Waterbury Symphony’s community partnerships\, as well. “Collaborating with Waterbury Arts Magnet School to perform in their spectacular courtyard and with Five Points Center for the Visual Arts to perform in their brand-new Torrington center is an exciting way to connect with different areas in our community\,” explains Bjaland. Praised by critics for his passionate expression and dazzling technique\, pianist Andrew Armstrong has delighted audiences across Asia\, Europe\, Latin America\, Canada\, and the United States\, including performances at Alice Tully Hall\, Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory\, and Warsaw’s National Philharmonic. Andrew’s orchestral engagements across the globe have seen him perform a sprawling repertoire of more than 50 concertos with orchestra. He has performed with such conductors as Peter Oundjian\, Itzhak Perlman\, Günther Herbig\, Stefan Sanderling\, Jean-Marie Zeitouni\, and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski\, and has appeared in solo recitals in chamber music concerts with the Elias\, Alexander\, American\, and Manhattan String Quartets\, and also as a member of the Caramoor Virtuosi\, Boston Chamber Music Society\, Seattle Chamber Music Society\, and the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players. The 2019-2020 Season takes Andrew across the globe with concerts in London\, Glasgow\, Amsterdam\, Bergen\, Dresden\, Copenhagen\, Prague\, and across the US\, Canada\, and Australia. Also this season\, Andrew and violinist James Ehnes team up to release the complete cycle of 10 Beethoven Violin Sonatas to celebrate the master’s 250th birthday in 2020. The duo performs the cycle in cities around the world this year. On top of his performance activities\, Andrew serves as Artistic Director of Columbia Museum of Art’s Chamber Music on Main series in South Carolina\, and enters his third year as Director of the Chamber Music Camp at Wisconsin’s Green Lake Festival of Music. \nAndrew’s debut solo CD featuring was released to great critical acclaim: “I have heard few pianists play [Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Sonata]\, recorded or in concert\, with such dazzling clarity and confidence” (American Record Guide). He followed that success with a disc on Cordelia Records of works by Chopin\, Liszt\, Debussy\, and the world premiere recording of Bielawa’s Wait for piano & drone. He has released several award-winning recordings with his longtime recital partner James Ehnes — most recently Beethoven’s Sonatas Nos. 4\, 5\, & 8\, to stellar reviews. Andrew is devoted to outreach programs and playing for children. In addition to his many concerts\, his performances are heard regularly on National Public Radio and WQXR\, New York City’s premier classical music station. Alex Rybeck\, Music Director\, is a pianist\, arranger\, and composer who has worked with such showbiz legends as George Abbott\, Hal Prince\, Tommy Tune\, Burt Bacharach\, and Eartha Kitt. Broadway credits include Merrily We Roll Along and Grand Hotel. He has served as Music Director for Faith Prince\, Karen Akers\, Lis and Ann Hampton Callaway\, Donna McKechnie\, Marni Nixon\, Kitty Carlisle Hart\, Keren Mason\, Jeff Harnar\, Lee Roy Reams\, and Jason Graae\, to name a few. Numerous CDs include “The 1959 Broadway Songbook” (Jeff Harnar)\, “Sibling Revelry” (The Callaways)\, “Leading Men Don’t Dance” (Ron Rains & Others)\, and every solo album by Liz Callaway. As a grad student (NYU Musical Theater Writing Program)\, he was mentored by Leonard Bernstein\, Stephen Sondheim\, Stephen Schwartz\, Arthur Laurents\, and Comden & Green. He lives in New York City. \nMaria Wirries is a graduate of the musical theatre program at Penn State. She was most recently seen in the Broadway traveling company of Dear Even Hansen. Her other theatre credits include the Broadway revival workshop of Once on This Island; The Artist Series Hot and Cole; Penn State School of Theatre’s Be More Chill\, Sweet Charity\, Hair\, Titanic\, and The Players Theatre’s Master Class. Maria also performs solo cabarets and often collaborates with the Sarasota Orchestra on their Master Works series. \nMaria has a huge appreciation for new work and has performed newly commissioned pieces by composers and artists James Grant\, Dick Hyman\, Alex Rybeck\, and Sheridan Seyfried. At Penn State\, she also participated in a commission project of a new theatre piece written by Mike Reid and Sarah Schlesinger as well as participating in the world premiere of Love in Hate Nation\, a Joe Iconis musical. \nMaria also writes her own songs that can be heard on Spotify\, ITunes\, and all other streaming services. \nAbout Waterbury Symphony Orchestra
The WSO builds connections across the region with exploratory concerts\, events\, and educational programs. The WSO maintains a firm commitment to produce programs that are of value to its patrons\, participants and community partners. This commitment is rooted in the Symphony’s core belief that music education and shared cultural experiences are essential to creating community. Founded in 1938\, the Symphony has assembled talented musicians across New England and the Tri-state area to perform throughout Northwest Connecticut. SUMMARY:It's All About Process
DESCRIPTION:West Gallery \nJohn Gintoff | Eleanor Sabin | Max Seinfeld | Kevin Van Aelst \n\n\n\n\nThe group exhibition\, It’s All About Process\, features work by artists John Gintoff\, Eleanor Sabin\, Max Seinfeld & Kevin Van Aelst. Although their concepts and visions are different\, each of the artists in this exhibition present a unique approach to process and alternative use of media and compositional elements. Photography is often a straightforward and traditional way to capture how we experience moments; however\, John Gintoff challenges how the viewer perceives traditional photography by using photographic prints to create three-dimensional sculptural forms. Kevin Van Aelst also plays with a reimagining of traditional photography. His layered digital process deals with the malleability of our notions of truth and memory. Van Aelst states\, “The work aims to examine the relationship between photography\, reality and memory and is a contemplation of memory itself”. Eleanor Sabin’s work explores the conflicts between the man-made and natural world. Her process of creating layered detailed pen and ink drawings of the natural world are then disrupted by saturated airbrushed color\, bold geometric patterns and lines creating new tensions of space. Max Seinfeld’s sculptures also play with tensions through contrasting materials\, color and form. His small sculptures’ interplay of solid vs. seemingly liquid forms allows for a sensation of a lingering touch or inching grip. The interaction of natural and artificial colors in Seinfeld work are drawn from observations in contemporary media\, such as the allure of a red Cadillac versus the natural colors of the raw materials. \n  \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Two Stories | Erin Koch Smith
DESCRIPTION:East Gallery \nErin Koch Smith’s exhibition\, Two Stories\, draws from two bodies of work that utilize imaginative narratives and stories to build a language for experience that cannot be expressed in a different way. One narrative features the imaginary heroics of a lamp trapped inside a psychological landscape built out of memories\, which is based on Philip Guston’s 1974 painting\, “Lamp”. The wildly whimsical paintings create new logics and narratives using the physicality of the paint as part of the storytelling process. Smith states she is\, “interested in the ways words can fail\, and how painting and drawing can fill the gap.” In her other works on exhibit\, Smith searches for form within her compositions using memories and representations of her childhood emphasizing personal wants and desires. The paintings can also be seen to reflect fears of growing older\, the cloudiness of middle life and the pressures of creating a home.

DESCRIPTION:TDP Gallery \n\n\n\n\nWill Holub’s exhibition\, It’s Today\, explores issues of chance and recognition with textural abstract paintings that have fragmented photographic imagery randomly arrayed across their surfaces. Made using a variety of approaches\, and with materials such as card stock\, C- prints and transfer images\, they address not only the consequences of image fracturing\, but also provide encouraging evidence of the strengthening aspects of reconstruction. \nAfter three decades of experimentation with the tactile properties of paper as a low-relief material on the surfaces of his paintings\, Holub continues to investigate how and why haptic art first establishes a “felt\,” rather than a simply “seen\,” connection with viewers. \nWill Holub was the winner of the 2020 Five Points Small Works exhibition juried by Power Boothe. \n\n\n\n\n  \n
