SUMMARY:Native Voices
DESCRIPTION:The Native Voices group exhibition honors the talent\, history\, and voices of Indigenous artists and artists with indigenous lineage from across North America working with various content and media. \nParticipating artists include Nate Begay\, Patrick Collins\, Rebekah Jarvey\, and Jason Montgomery.  \nNate Begay \nUsing his history with graffiti art\, Begay incorporates bright\, bold colors\, often using spray paint markers in his paintings. He blends new styles with old-school imagery and symbols. Begay likes to vary his subject matter and incorporate important Navajo figures and animals into the paintings. Begay uses his artwork as a storytelling and teaching implement to educate viewers on Navajo identity and culture. \nPatrick Collins \nCollins’ intricately drawn pastel portraits use bright colors that reflect the beauty of his culture while capturing the iconic personalities of his subjects. His paintings also emphasize the many issues Native Americans struggle with\, in contemporary society. Collins adds cultural symbols and metal leafing to highlight the stories told through the Anishinaabe (Original People).  \nRebekah Jarvey \nRebekah Jarvey is a self-proclaimed indigenous fashionista. Her Art/Fashion career took off during the pandemic after her Flashy Night & Day mask went viral on social media attracting people and publications from around the world. She mixes traditional tribal heritage with her crafting skills and the fashions of today to create modern\, urban\, and authentic masks and ribbon skirts with her signature hashtag #RibbonDrip. Jarvey’s goal is to convey to the Indigenous community the importance of knowing their families’ customs and traditions.  \nJason Montgomery \nJason’s work engages the cross-section of identity\, cultural hybridization\, post-colonial reconstruction\, and political agency. His writing and visual art bridge the aesthetics and feel of the early cubist collage movement and the Russian abstract movement of the 1920s with living and historical Native/Indigenous Californian and Chicano art traditions.

SUMMARY:Cyanotype: Wet and Traditional with Jill Enfield
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Information \nDates: April 25-26 \nTime: 10AM – 6 PM \nLocation: Five Points Arts Center Photo Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $375 \nClass Cap: 8 \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nWorkshop Description \nOne of the early photographic processes\, invented in 1842 by Sir John Hirschel\, was the cyanotype.  It is based on sunlight causing a change in a light sensitive emulsion brushed onto paper or fabric.  Many of the early photographic images were called “sun prints” because they had to be exposed using UV lights\, or sunlight. This is a contact print process and you will need negatives the size you would like your final image to be.   \nWe will start with learning how to make digital negatives and move on to making cyanotypes on watercolor paper or fabric. We will also explore working with photogram materials to use with wet cyanotypes and then toning. Discussions will be on best images\, paper\, fabrics\, and differences in chemical dilutions as well as toners. \n  \nRequired Materials \nThe Art Center will provide all cyanotype chemistry. Materials participants should bring: \n\nGloves and an apron\nMask\nBrushes\nWatercolor papers. Recommended papers to try: Hahnemuhle Platinum Rag\, Arches Platine\, Fabriano Acquarelle\, Clear Print Drafting Vellum or Strathmore Artist Plate Finish Drawing paper\, Cranes Kid Finish #32\, Parchment Wove #44\, Cot 320\n\n  \nInstructor Bio \nJill Enfield is a fine art photographer\, educator\, curator and author and has been teaching photography for many years with a concentration on historical techniques and alternative processes. Her three books: Photo Imaging: A Complete Guide To Alternative Processes published by Amphoto\, and\, Jill Enfield’s Guide to Alternative Processes: Popular Historical and Contemporary Techniques (First and Second Editions)\, published by Focal Press\, are award winning books\, and used in schools all over the world.  The books include step-by-step instructions on a variety of techniques including: wet plate collodion\, dry plate modern tintypes\, platinum and palladium printing\, cyanotypes\, liquid emulsion\, albumen printing\, hand painting and more.  \nJill’s work has also been chosen to be on book covers about these techniques and in magazines. Jill has podcasts and videos that can be seen on YouTube and other areas of the web. She has shown her work throughout the USA and Europe and had a one-woman show in 6 galleries on Ellis Island called THE NEW AMERICANS. A 3-minute video about the installation and the glass house made of old windows and portraits of recent immigrants can be seen by clicking on this link. The show then traveled with the Glasshouse of Immigrants featured at Photoville in DUMBO\, NYC and the Annenberg Center in LA\, and is still traveling to many cities throughout the USA. Enfield is looking for a permanent home for the glasshouse. \nEnfield has been teaching at Parsons The New School of Design since the late 1980’s and at many workshops throughout the world. Her fine art images can be seen in many museums around the world as well as in private collections.

SUMMARY:Layered Woodcut Workshop with Jim Lee
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Lee \nDates: Saturdays\, April 30 – May 14 \nTime: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nWorkshop Description \nThis course will examine the bold and direct capabilities of woodcut and other relief print surfaces. It will take the student from preliminary sketches to the carving of blocks\, using the multiple block technique. By printing multiple layers of transparent inks\, images will develop with lush color relationships and luminous surfaces. We will work with color separation/registration\, carving with hand and power tools\, built-up surfaces\, color ink mixing\, and stencils. Monotype techniques will also be introduced and can be combined with the carved blocks. During the workshop students first develop a key block\, transfer the image to other blocks to carry various colors and then print small editions\, exploring color variations. Students should plan to arrive with several worked out compositions\, either representational or abstract. \nStudents do not need to have previous printmaking experience.
