SUMMARY:TDP Gallery - Nikko Sedgwick
DESCRIPTION:This series of mixed-media works is a meditation on the passage of time\, morality\, memory\, and interpersonal relationships. Sedgwick deconstructs and excavates his images revealing many layers. He melts the photo emulsion using various solvents as a way to paint within the photographs; he then combines various mediums including paint\, ink\, glitter\, and collaged materials to evoke an animation or aura within the image. Sedgwick states\, “Nothing makes our passage through time resonate with as much immediacy than seeing our children\, parents and loved ones being born\, aging and dying around us.” This manifestation of “life” within the images contradicts our conventional notions of a photograph distilling a moment in time.

SUMMARY:East Gallery - A View of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:East Gallery – A View of Humanity \nKaren Bonanno\, Camille Eskell\, Jennifer Knaus\, Gerald Saladyga \nThis group exhibition bridges a variety of styles of painting and sculpture that highlight the figure as the main subject and speaks to the many viewpoints and representations of identity that make up humanity. \n  \nKaren Bonanno’s expressive paintings highlight interactions between the female figure and the empowerment of women. The paintings depict scenes from everyday life\, focusing on interactions between the subject and their environment. Bonanno’s bold color\, gestures\, and mark making represent the strong\, confident\, and iconic female figure. \n  \nCamille Eskell’s Intricate textile sculptures examine cultural and family dynamics in relation to her Iraqi-Jewish heritage\, with themes of vulnerability\, rebirth\, gender relationships\, and social conventions.  Eskell states\, “I tackle the impact of this social and psychological legacy mainly through a feminist lens.” The crafting of each piece is meticulous\, time-consuming\, and process-driven using a range of materials and techniques\, both traditional and contemporary. \n\nJennifer Knaus’ imaginary portraits draw inspiration from surrealist subconscious thought. Her acute attention to detail idealizes notions of beauty and importance that are embellished with humor and absurdity as entire gardens grow from her figures’ heads. \n\nGerald Saladyga’s stylized paintings combine a flattened sense of perspective\, along with the repetition of objects and characters.  Saladyga states\, “It could be said that I “don’t paint” a painting\, but construct it from the bottom of the canvas upwards using various widths of tape to define the prescribed edges and shapes using a particular color scheme until completion.” His paintings also combine contemporary and historic war imagery\, as seen in his painting Two Saints Visit the Ukraine.

SUMMARY:West Gallery - Debra Weisberg
DESCRIPTION:The work of Debra Weisberg will be featured in the new exhibit\, Holding the Center Still: Redux. Comprising collaged paper works and a large-scale floor installation\, Weisberg’s richly dense body of work touches on the profound relationship between collapse and renewal. The work exposes the highly vulnerable nature of paper as a transparent and fragile medium that is also surprisingly enduring and sturdy. \nDuring the opening reception and final day of the show\, Brazilian choreographer\, Paula Higa\, will perform an interpretive dance in response to Weisberg’s work on June 9 at 7 pm and July 15 at 5 pm respectively. Higa’s performance adds a human element to the chaotic paper landscape\, connecting the visual and haptic senses to the materiality of the work. \nThis exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council\, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council – Funding is also provided by the University of Vermont\, College of Arts and Sciences.

SUMMARY:Annex - Erika Larskaya
DESCRIPTION:PORTALS\nOpening Reception: June 23\, 6-8 PM\nFor her current exhibition\, Portals\, Erika Larskaya presents selected works from various series. Each work shares the common theme of opening to alternate spaces; spaces in parallel existence to this moment. Each painting is its own invitation to explore beyond the surface and enter into an invisible\, subtle\, and unexpressed territory\, where complexity\, impermanence\, and the mental struggle to balance emotional weight are present and where opposites can complement each other in dynamic coexistence.\nErika Larskaya of Torrington Connecticut is an abstract artist working in acrylics and mixed media. She is originally from St. Petersburg\, Russia. Erika brings a passion for experimentation and pushing boundaries to her work which has driven her to expand beyond the conventional. She has evolved her own methodology and technique – driven by her desire to express things that are not seen but rather felt.\n  \nGallery Open: \nFridays 6-8 PM \nSaturdays: 4-8 PM \nSundays 1-4 PM \nand open by appointment \n

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Peter Brown: Disguises - Put Up Your Hands
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, July 21 from 6-8 PM – Free and Open to the Public \nEast Gallery – Disguises: Put Up Your Hands \nPeter Brown \nThis series of Pinhole and flatbed scanner images portray perceptions /memories from a past personal traumatic episode in Peter’s life\, an armed home invasion. The characters and scenes depict notions of innocence\, violence\, anger\, dismay\, PTSD\, despair\, vengeance\, violation\, and justice. This menagerie of elements – color negative film\, lensless cameras\, Pinhole lenses\, all come together to form these very personal images. Brown goes on to state\, “And to further push this imagery into the public perceptions as a national debate\, we need to address the growing ease of gun violence\, disparity of wealth and race throughout this country.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Five Points Launchpad Biennial
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception Friday\, July 21 from 6-8 PM\n\nWest & TDP Galleries – Launchpad Biennial\nDaniel Baird Miller\, Christian Crowley\, Casandra Cyr\, Kyrsten Lane\, Ethan Newman\, Sydney Samele\, and Megan Victoria. \nThe Five Points Launchpad was formed in partnership with the University of Hartford\, Hartford Art School in an answer to the growing needs of art school graduates\, and to encourage the cross-pollination of ideas. The Launchpad offers participants access to affordable shared studio spaces above Five Points Gallery\, free access to the Five Points Arts Center\, a serious arts community\, mentorships\, and exhibition opportunities.\n \nDaniel Baird-Miller \nUsing a variety of old cameras and film\, Dan creates alternatively processed photographs that combine cyanotype chemistry with hand-drawn details. Centered around his posthumous relationship with his father\, he layers together vague memories\, in an attempt to seek answers. \n  \nChristian Crowley \nCrowley’s large\, abstract\, and energetic mixed-media paintings combine color\, text\, and symbols in an intuitive\, unabashedly\, and thoughtful manner. When talking about his work he simply states\, “I am a vessel for creativity. I don’t like half-measures. I do not want art to be a part of my life… but my life to be a part of art.” \n  \nCasandra Cyr \nCasandra’s ominous pen and ink illustrations speak to the horror and fantasy enthusiast; creating a sense of fear and paranoia in both the subject and atmosphere of the drawings. Her eerie depictions of the fictional monster\, the “long-neck-man”\, are part of an ongoing graphic novel she is working on. \n\nKyrsten Lane \nKyrsten’s mixed media paintings incorporate bold saturated colors\, and organic line-work as a reflection of patterns she observes in nature. Using monochromatic palettes\, Lane’s use of color possesses a quality that can command attention or divert the gaze while her linework creates sculptural illusions. \n  \nEthan Newman \nEthan’s abstract expressionist paintings draw inspiration from his dreams and music influences. These layered gestural works oscillate between figuration and abstraction. Newman states\, “I’m interested in these glimpses\, and the feelings surrounding them\, and that is part of what I’m after in my creative process. In my attempt to re-create them\, however\, I often discover something completely new along the way.” \n  \nSydney Samele \nAs a printmaker\, Sydney works between drawing and intricately carved multiple woodblocks to create her prints. She is greatly inspired by mythologies from around the world. While the importance of mythology is not always clear\, these stories are rich in history\, culture\, and perspective. This series more specifically looks at flood mythos and transformations through water. \n\nMegan Victoria \nIn her ongoing Extraterrestrial Series\, Megan draws and paints chimera-like amalgamations that are inspired by the natural world\, including plants\, fungi\, animals\, and human anatomy. As the viewer draws their own narratives and questions around the origin of the figures\, one may wonder if they originate from reality or fantasy.

SUMMARY:Drypoint Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Carol Wax \nDates: Saturday and Sunday\, July 29-30\, 2023 \nTimes: 10AM – 4PM \nMembers $225.00 \nNon- Members $250.00 \n\nThe goal of this workshop is to explore a wide range of linear\, tonal\, and textural effects\, possibly using an array of tools and drypoint techniques. Instruction is designed to meet varied artistic styles\, cover the basics for beginners\, and offer new approaches to drypoint that experienced printmakers may not have previously considered.  Individual needs and interests are addressed through one-on-one coaching on the most appropriate uses of these techniques for developing one’s visions. \nDrypoint encompasses a wide range of techniques for incising images directly on copper plates without the use of acid. The ability to work tonally and linearly\, using additive and deductive approaches\, makes drypoint one of the most spontaneous and versatile printmaking mediums.  In this workshop\, participants learn how to use scribes\, roulettes\, stipplers\, gravers\, and other metalsmithing tools to draw richly textured linear and nuanced tonal images. Uses of drypoint and carborundum for creating grounds that may be worked in the mezzotint manner are also covered. Individual attention gives beginners solid introduction\, helps experienced printmakers expand their approach to the medium\, and allows all participants to work at their own pace. \n\nTo Register: click here

SUMMARY:Anthotype Workshop: Forage and Print
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Anne Eder \nDate: Saturday\, July 29\, 2023 \nTime: 10 AM – 4 PM \nMember: $198.00 \nNon-Member: $220.00 \nThe medium of photography is not generally environmentally friendly\, but in this workshop\, participants will explore the wonderful and less toxic world of plant-based printing! Anthotypes are a nineteenth century process first explored by Sir John Herschel\, who also gave us cyanotypes and the word “photography.” There is not much that is more romantic or intriguing than using the natural light sensitivity of plants to create prints and seeing your images emerge from an emulsion of fragrant rose petals or nutritious chard! \nTO REGISTER: CLICK HERE
