SUMMARY:Monotype Printmaking: A New Angle\, with Tony Kirk
DESCRIPTION:Monotype Printmaking: A New Angle \nInstructor Name: Tony Kirk \nDate(s): November 13\, 2022 \nTime(s): 10:00 – 5:00 \nLocation: Robert Dente Printmaking Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $110 \nClass Cap: 10 \n\nWorkshop Description \nSeveral years ago\, as an invited Master Printer at Woodstock School of Art’s annual Monothon printmaking fundraiser\, I noticed that a very tall woman was seated at a table brushing ink onto a monotype plate. The seat was too high for the table\, and she looked very uncomfortable. In her own studio\, this artist painted standing up on an easel. It was then that I suggested affixing her monotype plate to a wall\, and since then\, this is her preferred approach to monotype printmaking. \nThis method has many advantages. While holding a brush not only can the artist work with the wrist but also can move the brush around from the shoulder. The ability to step back from the work at a distance is an added benefit especially if you turn your back to the plate and view your composition in a handheld mirror. This of course is how the plate will print. \nIn this workshop\, the walls will be protected with butcher paper\, and the plates attached to the walls at a comfortable height for each artist whether they prefer to work standing or seated. A 12 x 12 ins Plexiglas mirror will be available for each artist. \n\nRequired Materials \nParticipants should bring: \n\nPreliminary sketches were drawn to 18 x 24 ins\, 16 x 20 ins\, or 11 x 14 ins on tracing paper or acetate\n2 inch\, 1.5 inch\, 1-inch brushes plus some smaller brushes\nBounty paper towels\nQ- tips\nWater-soluble crayons such as those made by Caran d’Ache or Mungyo extra soft water soluble oil pastels.\nA portfolio to take prints home with.\n\n\nThe instructor will bring: \n\nPrintmaking papers such as Magnani Pescia\, Somerset\, and Rives BFK to sell at cost.\nApprox. $6.00 to $7.00 per sheet.\nPlexiglas sizes 18 x 24 ins\, 16 x 20 ins and 11 x 14 ins. plus a selection of smaller plates.\nCotton rags.\n\n\nInstructor Bio \nMaster Printer Anthony Kirk brings almost fifty years of professional experience to Anthony Kirk Editions (AKE). Born in Scotland\, Kirk attended Art School in England before moving to NYC in 1974. In 1988\, Kenneth Tyler invited him to head up the etching department at Tyler Graphics Ltd. where he etched and proofed plates for Helen Frankenthaler\, Frank Stella\, John Walker\, Donald Sultan and Joan Mitchell. In 2000\, Kirk established his own printmaking studio in North Salem\, NY. Here he brings to each collaborative project\, an accumulation of experience\, thereby realizing in print\, the vision of each artist whether established or new to the medium. \n\nInstructor Website \nhttps://www.anthonykirkeditions.com/

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Matin Malikazada - Five Points Annex
DESCRIPTION:Five Points Annex Gallery presents Matin Malikzada Pottery!\nThis show will be up from December 9 to 18\, 2022\nOpen hours are Saturdays 12-4 PM and by appointment.\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n MALIKZADA POTTERY\n\n\nMalikzada Pottery is informed and inspired by the ancient techniques handed down through the centuries and now expertly and lovingly realized by seventh-generation Afghan master potter\, Matin Malikzada\, a humanitarian refugee recently resettled in the US. This work is functional as well as decorative\, simple yet elegant\, and glazed in hues that reflect the earth’s rich\, natural palette. Each piece\, hand-crafted and signed by the artist (washing by hand recommended)\, is food and water safe.\nMatin Malikzada is internationally recognized for his technical skill and elegant designs. A native of Istalif\, Afghanistan\, once a vibrant center of ceramic art and commerce\, Matin was forced to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover. Along with his family\, he is now resettled in Northwest Connecticut where he continues his journey as an artist.\n\nIn Kabul\, Matin served as head of the Ceramics department at the Turquoise Mountain Institute\, an NGO founded by King Charles III\, where in his youth he studied and honed the skills inherited from his father. Upon graduating\, he was hired as a Master of Ceramics\, and ultimately rose to lead the department.Matin revitalized a nearly lost art of symmetrical design and turquoise glaze derived from natural pigments unique to Istalifi pottery and has trained over one hundred artisans in these ancient techniques.\nIn addition to holding a bachelor’s degree in Law from Tabesh University in Kabul\, he has earned Certificates in Design and Crafts from the City and Guilds Institute of London\, been a visiting artist at the Institute of Ceramic Studies at Shigaraki\, Japan\, and authored books on Istalifi Pottery.\nAs a practicing artist for nearly twenty years\, Matin has exhibited his work and demonstrated his skill to heads of state\, dignitaries\, artists\, educators\, as well as museum- and gallery-goers around the world.

SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk: Taplin\, Grady & Schroeder
DESCRIPTION:Register Here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Q6V1yn8KRaO6kBB2hi20gg \nThe West Gallery features paintings by Bridget Grady that focus on the fragile ecologies of forests and swamps. The TDP Gallery highlights mixed media works by printmaker Kathleen Schroeder that highlight liminal spaces between art and science. Robert Taplin’s work in the East Gallery combines sculpture and photography in ways that address opposing concepts. \nFive Points West Gallery: Fragile Ecologies \nBridget Grady investigates sensitive ecological environments both representatively and abstractly in her forest and swamp paintings. Her maximalist approach to painting or replicating textures and colors blur the definitions and boundaries of space. These environments are in a constant state of change\, and it’s Grady’s belief that cultural attitudes have the greatest impact on the condition of the environment. Grady states\, “The work focuses on the connection of the psyche to nature and the translation of that experience through the perceptual process of painting.” \nFive Points TDP Gallery: Of Two Minds: Dancing Between Art and Science \nKathleen Schroeder combines chine collé with lithographs in this new series which addresses relationships between art and science. Focused on space that is in a transition or on a threshold between two points in time or space\, Schroeder’s work is informed by her studies of embryonic development and growth…. a liminal space in a constant state of flux. The minimalist graphic elements of line in the prints on exhibition speak to visual scientific data structures and graphs of this intangible space. \nFive Points East Gallery: Outscapes \nRobert Taplin’s work brings the familiar and strange into somewhat startling proximity. Taplin states\, “The role of the artist has been to expose the lie\, reveal the hidden agenda\, and break the dominant image. His relief sculptures and ghost boxes combine layered imagery that moves back and forth between the illusion and the reality of three dimensions; focusing on opposing\, yet entangled forces of modernity – the rational and the irrational\, and the political and the personal\, finding an equilibrium between these forces. \n

SUMMARY:Monotype Printmaking: A New Angle
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Tony Kirk \nDate: Sunday\, April 16\, 2023 \nTime: 10:00AM – 4:00PM \nAges: 18+ \nMembers $90.00 \nNon – Members $100.00 \nSeveral years ago\, as an invited Master Printer at Woodstock School of Art’s annual Monothon printmaking fundraiser\, I noticed that a very tall woman was seated at a table brushing ink on to a monotype plate. The seat was too high for the table\, and she looked very uncomfortable. In her own studio this artist painted standing up at an easel. \nIn this workshop the walls will be protected with butcher paper and the plates attached to the walls at a comfortable height for each artist whether they prefer to work standing or seated. A 12 x 12 ins Plexiglas mirror will be available for each artist. \nRegister: \nhttps://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/event.jsp?event=499&

SUMMARY:Ziatype
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jessica Somers \nDate: April 22\, 2023 \nTime: 9AM – 5PM \nMember $ 247.50 \nNon- Member $ 275.00 \n Ziatype\, a modern alternative process\, perfected in 1980 by Richard Sullivan\, uses hand-painted emulsion and UV light to create a photographic image. The Ziatype process utilizes the “noble metal” palladium resulting in archival prints that yield a tonal range greater than traditional black and white papers. Additionally\, Ziatype chemistry can be adjusted to create varying hues from warm brown-black to cool grey-violet. In this workshop\, we will use digital negatives to print to the Ziatype process. Participants will be guided through the basics of exposing\, processing\, and controlling tone\, hue\, and contrast in the Ziatype process. At the conclusion of this workshop\, students will come away with a selection of their own Ziatype prints and will also be provided with written instructions\, a Ziatype supply list\, and a digital curve file for printing Ziatype negatives. \nRegister: \nhttps://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fivepointsarts/event.jsp?event=481&

DESCRIPTION:Our Story\nYour gift matters! \nLet’s face it—just a little over ten years ago\, there was no Five Points Arts. \nAnd now\, because of YOU\, and other like-minded people who support the arts in our community\, Five Points Arts is thriving. There is Five Points Gallery\, one of Connecticut’s most respected contemporary exhibition venues\, located in downtown Torrington; Five Points Annex\, next door to the Gallery\, featuring community pop-up exhibitions; the Five Points Artist Launchpad\, in support of emerging artists; and Five Points Art Center\, located on University Drive\, offering programs and workshops taught by professional artists for all ages and skill levels. \nYes\, your gift matters! With your gift\, you help support workshops designed for cutting-edge artistic exploration. With your gift\, you help make adaptive community-driven artistic programs available. And\, yes\, with your gift\, you help provide a community pop-up gallery for emerging artists\, artisans\, and community groups who want to exhibit their work to the public. \nYOU are helping the arts in our community\, and beyond. \nYes\, your gift matters!
