SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Matin Malikazada - Five Points Annex
DESCRIPTION:Five Points Annex Gallery presents Matin Malikzada Pottery!\nThis show will be up from December 9 to 18\, 2022\nOpen hours are Saturdays 12-4 PM and by appointment.\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n MALIKZADA POTTERY\n\n\nMalikzada Pottery is informed and inspired by the ancient techniques handed down through the centuries and now expertly and lovingly realized by seventh-generation Afghan master potter\, Matin Malikzada\, a humanitarian refugee recently resettled in the US.  This work is functional as well as decorative\, simple yet elegant\, and glazed in hues that reflect the earth’s rich\, natural palette.  Each piece\, hand-crafted and signed by the artist (washing by hand recommended)\, is food and water safe.\nMatin Malikzada is internationally recognized for his technical skill and elegant designs. A native of Istalif\, Afghanistan\, once a vibrant center of ceramic art and commerce\, Matin was forced to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover. Along with his family\, he is now resettled in Northwest Connecticut where he continues his journey as an artist.\n\nIn Kabul\, Matin served as head of the Ceramics department at the Turquoise Mountain Institute\, an NGO founded by King Charles III\, where in his youth he studied and honed the skills inherited from his father. Upon graduating\, he was hired as a Master of Ceramics\, and ultimately rose to lead the department.Matin revitalized a nearly lost art of symmetrical design and turquoise glaze derived from natural pigments unique to Istalifi pottery and has trained over one hundred artisans in these ancient techniques.\nIn addition to holding a bachelor’s degree in Law from Tabesh University in Kabul\, he has earned Certificates in Design and Crafts from the City and Guilds Institute of London\, been a visiting artist at the Institute of Ceramic Studies at Shigaraki\, Japan\, and authored books on Istalifi Pottery.\nAs a practicing artist for nearly twenty years\, Matin has exhibited his work and demonstrated his skill to heads of state\, dignitaries\, artists\, educators\, as well as museum- and gallery-goers around the world.

SUMMARY:Monotype Printmaking: A New Angle\, with Tony Kirk
DESCRIPTION:Monotype Printmaking: A New Angle \nInstructor Name: Tony Kirk \nDate(s): November 13\, 2022 \nTime(s): 10:00 – 5:00 \nLocation: Robert Dente Printmaking Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $110 \nClass Cap: 10 \n\nWorkshop Description \nSeveral years ago\, as an invited Master Printer at Woodstock School of Art’s annual Monothon printmaking fundraiser\, I noticed that a very tall woman was seated at a table brushing ink onto a monotype plate. The seat was too high for the table\, and she looked very uncomfortable. In her own studio\, this artist painted standing up on an easel. It was then that I suggested affixing her monotype plate to a wall\, and since then\, this is her preferred approach to monotype printmaking. \nThis method has many advantages. While holding a brush not only can the artist work with the wrist but also can move the brush around from the shoulder. The ability to step back from the work at a distance is an added benefit especially if you turn your back to the plate and view your composition in a handheld mirror. This of course is how the plate will print. \nIn this workshop\, the walls will be protected with butcher paper\, and the plates attached to the walls at a comfortable height for each artist whether they prefer to work standing or seated. A 12 x 12 ins Plexiglas mirror will be available for each artist. \n\nRequired Materials \nParticipants should bring: \n\nPreliminary sketches were drawn to 18 x 24 ins\, 16 x 20 ins\, or 11 x 14 ins  on tracing paper or acetate\n2 inch\, 1.5 inch\, 1-inch brushes plus some smaller brushes\nBounty paper towels\nQ- tips\nWater-soluble crayons such as those made by Caran d’Ache or Mungyo extra soft water soluble oil pastels.\nA portfolio to take prints home with.\n\n\nThe instructor will bring: \n\nPrintmaking papers such as Magnani Pescia\, Somerset\, and Rives BFK to sell at cost.\nApprox. $6.00 to $7.00 per sheet.\nPlexiglas sizes 18 x 24 ins\, 16 x 20 ins and 11 x 14 ins. plus a selection of smaller plates.\nCotton rags.\n\n\nInstructor Bio \nMaster Printer Anthony Kirk brings almost fifty years of professional experience to Anthony Kirk Editions (AKE). Born in Scotland\, Kirk attended Art School in England before moving to NYC in 1974. In 1988\, Kenneth Tyler invited him to head up the etching department at Tyler Graphics Ltd. where he etched and proofed plates for Helen Frankenthaler\, Frank Stella\, John Walker\, Donald Sultan and Joan Mitchell. In 2000\, Kirk established his own printmaking studio in North Salem\, NY. Here he brings to each collaborative project\, an accumulation of experience\, thereby realizing in print\, the vision of each artist whether established or new to the medium. \n\nInstructor Website \nhttps://www.anthonykirkeditions.com/

SUMMARY:Cyanotype: An Introduction with Daniel Baird-Miller
DESCRIPTION:Cyanotype: An Introduction \nInstructor Name: Dan Baird-Miller \nDate(s): October 20\, 2022 \nTime(s): 9:00 – 5:00 \nLocation: Alternative Photography Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $175 \nClass Cap: 8 \n\nWorkshop Description \nCyanotype\, or the Blue Print process\, is a great introduction to the not-so-dark room\, or Alternative Process photo lab. Created by John Hershel in 1842\, the process involves coating paper with UV-sensitive chemistry and exposing the print to either the sun or an artificial UV source. Cyanotypes are one of the more forgiving and least expensive processes. If you want to continue working with cyanotypes\, chemistry is one of the least hazardous and does not require a lot of additional tools. \nWe will be printing digital negatives from your own film or digital photographs. You will learn the workflow I have developed and a short demonstration. Workshop attendees will leave with the digital negative workflow\, Cyanotype prints\, Negatives\, and instruction on the Cyanotype process. \n\nRequired Materials \nDan will create 1 digital negative for each participant prior to the workshop and will coordinate with everyone beforehand. You are encouraged to bring more images\, or negatives to the workshop. Paper and chemistry will be provided by the Art Center and are included in the workshop. Please bring an apron or smock. \n\nInstructor Bio \nDan is a fine art photographer. His first love is analog film. He looks at a film like wine. Where many see unreliable\, he sees opportunity and chance. What you see may not be what you get\, and that excites him. His work stretches from landscape to portraiture\, to abstraction. \nHe received his BFA from The Hartford Art School and his MFA from Lesley University. Dan studied under Christopher James and is included in The Book of Alternative Processes\, ed 3. He worked for New55\, a startup reengineering large format positive/negative film. He is currently a Five Points Launchpad artist. Dan lives and works in Torrington\, CT. \n\nInstructor Website \ndanielbairdmiller.com

SUMMARY:Watercolor Without Fear! with Bridget Eileen Grady
DESCRIPTION:Watercolor Without Fear!\nWednesday Mornings 10am – 12pm \nOctober 19th\, October 26th\, November 2nd\, and November 9th\, 2022 \nInstructor: Bridget Eileen Grady \n  \nThis workshop will get you jump-started in the medium of watercolor. Learn to go with the flow and learn control at the same time with this slippery medium. \nWho’s this Class For? \nThe total “I can’t draw a straight line” beginner. \nPersons with a creative curiosity looking for a fun and meditative outlet to explore. \nArtists who want to play with a new medium or loosen up. \nYou will explore the use of watercolor as a drawing and painting medium. Learn basic techniques of creating washes\, bleeds\, and color mixing. Wet into wet\, Dry-brush\, and Gouache techniques will be explained and the properties of the paper will be discussed. \n\nMaterials List \nWatercolor is a medium that can be very inexpensive to work in successfully if chosen well in the beginning. It also is a medium where each artist decides what their personal preferences are over time. I recommend starting with a fairly good quality student paint and decent quality paper for avoiding frustration while you are learning. That investment will last a very long time. \nPaint \nTransparent Watercolors \nYou can choose either paint pans or tube watercolors for this course. \nI recommend Sakura Koi Watercolor sets or tubes\, and/or Windsor Newton Cotman line for a quality less expensive paint. \nIf you are buying individual pans or tubes\, please bring the following colors to the first class. \nCadmium red medium\, Alizarin Crimson\, Magenta\, Cobalt Violet\, Ultramarine Blue\, Thalo Blue\, Cadmium yellow medium\, Yellow Ochre\, Permanent Green Light\, Sap Green\, Burnt Umber\, Burnt Sienna \nBrushes \nSynthetic Watercolor brushes    3 Round Size 2\,4\,8\, and 2 flat  ½” and 1” size \nPrinceton makes an inexpensive series in sets\, just make sure they are specifically for watercolor. \n(I actually use student-quality brushes from Sax\, Sax Golden Synthetic Taklon). Individually purchased they are inexpensive and last a very long time. \nPaper \nPaper is a very personal choice and is often based on what the objective of the art piece is. \nI will have other papers for students to try while in class. \nFor this class\, I recommend The Strathmore 400 Series 140 lb Watercolor Paper Pads Cold Press Paper Tape bound and 1 of the size pads below. \n9”x 12”\, 12” 12”\, or 11” x14” \nPalette \nPlastic Palette\, White Ceramic Dish\, or Butcher Tray. \nOther Needs \nPencil\, eraser\, Sketch paper\, Water cups\, paper towels. \nInstructor Bio \nMs. Grady Obtained her M.F.A. in Painting at Western Connecticut State University.Previous to that she pursued graduate studies at Norwich University in Montpelier\, Vermont. Additionally\, she has studied classical methodology at Grand Central Atelier under Jacob Collins\, Camie Davis\, and Scott Waddell. Formerly Ms. Grady was an Assistant Professor of Art and Art coordinator at the School of Art\, Design\, and Media\, at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore where she was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award. SUMMARY:Victor Leger & Nature Triumphs Virtual Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Artist talk: Friday\, October 14\, at 6:30 PM \nClick here to register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pQRYS-6zTqCTBHS7GIyksw \nModerator: TBA \n  \nFEATURED ARTISTS: \nVictor Leger\, is a realist painter whose Plein-air paintings capture the contrast between deep space and the high detail of the environment. His intention is to express with obsessive accuracy the natural beauty of our surroundings. \nNature Triumphs is a group exhibition that features a range of styles and mediums and is based on human interactions within the environment and how people interact with and ultimately manipulate\, interfere with\, or alter nature. Featuring artists Leora Armstrong\, Aaron Borkowski\, Loren Eiferman\, Lisa Kellner & Scott Schuldt. \nLeora Armstrong is an interdisciplinary artist whose mixed media works depict ice erasure\, a consequence of human interactions with the environment. This multi-paneled installation of cyanotype on silk creates a sensorial experience of place. \nAaron Borkowski’s abstract photography uses digital manipulations to duplicate and manipulate or alter the viewer’s perception of the natural world. \nLoren Eiferman’s sculptures portray the impact humans have had on the ecosystem. Her work also speaks to the primal desire to touch nature. \nLisa Kellner explores the reluctant yet habitual collaboration of humans and nature. Her large oil paintings reflect on perceptions of space\, not only its physical attributes but also its memories. Paired with small sculptures created out of paint and collected detritus. \nScott Schuldt is a multidisciplinary artist working with the environment and natural sciences. Intricately hand-beaded and hand-sewn\, the works in this exhibition document the environment and intellectually and emotionally explore the idea of wilderness and mankind’s often counter-productive relationship with nature.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Tintypes with Luther Gerlach
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Tintypes     \nInstructor Name: Luther Gerlach \nDate(s): October 8\, 2022 or October 9\, 2022 \nTime(s): 9:00 – 4:30 \nLocation: Five Points Art Center Landscape \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $250 \nClass Cap: 5 participants per session \n\nWorkshop Description \nAn introduction to tintype photography for everyone! This Civil War-era process produces a direct positive black and white image on metal using pure elemental silver. It was the first widely available and affordable form of photography – producing a nearly instantaneous image; it was the Polaroid of its day. This is an opportunity to get your hands dirty and make beautiful images with one-on-one guidance from your teacher – an expert in alternative processes for the last 30 years. We will be producing 5×7” stereo portraits using a studio camera and lenses from my personal collection. Students will learn safety protocols\, watch a live demonstration\, mix chemistry\, pour plates\, and develop images to take home. \n\nLuther will be leading two identical sessions of this workshop; one on Saturday\, October 8th and a second on Sunday\, October 9th. You may register for either one. \n\nRequired Materials \nWear clothes you don’t mind getting stained! \n\nInstructor Bio \nLuther Gerlach has been working in historical photographic processes for the past 40 years\, highlighting the role of constraints in creative production and the hand-made\, tactile connection between the artist and his work. Known for nude portraits and urban scenes of downtown LA in his early career\, more recently Gerlach has pioneered the re-emergence of plein air wet plate collodion landscapes. His work distills detailed images of the natural world\, particularly trees\, seaweeds\, and grasses\, to emphasize pure light and line\, endowing his images with a subtly abstract quality. \nGerlach apprenticed with Brett Weston in Carmel and Hawaii in the 1980’s\, before learning the wet plate process which he still works in today. He led lectures and demonstrations at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles for nearly twenty years. He has exhibited at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, the Ventura Museum of Art\, the Schaknow Museum of Fine Art\, Miami\, the Denver Art Museum\, and The Palace of the Governors\, Santa Fe. Selected permanent collections include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, The J. Paul Getty Museum\, and the Michael G. Wilson Centre for Photography\, among others. \nThe artist lives and works in historic Hampton\, Connecticut where he offers workshops\, master printing services\, and darkroom rentals from his English style barn\, Little River Studio. \n\nInstructor Website \n www.luthergerlach.net

SUMMARY:Victor Leger - Skyscapes - Five Points Gallery
DESCRIPTION:East Gallery – Solo Exhibition \nVictor Leger is a realist painter whose Plein-air paintings capture the contrast between deep space and the high detail of the environment. His intention is to express with obsessive accuracy the natural beauty of our surroundings. Leger states “through my work I hope to capture and convey the sense of overwhelming enchantment that these moments produce\, sometimes with philosophical ruminations.” \n  \nArtist Statement: \nAs a painter\, I am intuitively interested in the interaction of light with the environment. It is my intention to express with obsessive accuracy the natural beauty found\, at times only for a fleeting moment\, in our surroundings. Through my work\, I hope to capture and convey the sense of overwhelming enchantment that these moments produce\, sometimes with philosophical ruminations. If the viewer can sense the quality of natural beauty that enhances our lives then I will have succeeded in my efforts as an artist. Peace.
