SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk: Taplin\, Grady & Schroeder
DESCRIPTION:Register Here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Q6V1yn8KRaO6kBB2hi20gg \nThe West Gallery features paintings by Bridget Grady that focus on the fragile ecologies of forests and swamps. The TDP Gallery highlights mixed media works by printmaker Kathleen Schroeder that highlight liminal spaces between art and science. Robert Taplin’s work in the East Gallery combines sculpture and photography in ways that address opposing concepts. \nFive Points West Gallery: Fragile Ecologies \nBridget Grady investigates sensitive ecological environments both representatively and abstractly in her forest and swamp paintings. Her maximalist approach to painting or replicating textures and colors blur the definitions and boundaries of space. These environments are in a constant state of change\, and it’s Grady’s belief that cultural attitudes have the greatest impact on the condition of the environment. Grady states\, “The work focuses on the connection of the psyche to nature and the translation of that experience through the perceptual process of painting.” \nFive Points TDP Gallery: Of Two Minds: Dancing Between Art and Science \nKathleen Schroeder combines chine collé with lithographs in this new series which addresses relationships between art and science. Focused on space that is in a transition or on a threshold between two points in time or space\, Schroeder’s work is informed by her studies of embryonic development and growth…. a liminal space in a constant state of flux. The minimalist graphic elements of line in the prints on exhibition speak to visual scientific data structures and graphs of this intangible space. \nFive Points East Gallery: Outscapes \nRobert Taplin’s work brings the familiar and strange into somewhat startling proximity. Taplin states\, “The role of the artist has been to expose the lie\, reveal the hidden agenda\, and break the dominant image. His relief sculptures and ghost boxes combine layered imagery that moves back and forth between the illusion and the reality of three dimensions; focusing on opposing\, yet entangled forces of modernity – the rational and the irrational\, and the political and the personal\, finding an equilibrium between these forces. \n

SUMMARY:Monotype Printmaking: A New Angle
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Tony Kirk \nDate: Sunday\, April 16\, 2023 \nTime: 10:00AM – 4:00PM \nAges: 18+ \nMembers $90.00 \nNon – Members $100.00 \nSeveral years ago\, as an invited Master Printer at Woodstock School of Art’s annual Monothon printmaking fundraiser\, I noticed that a very tall woman was seated at a table brushing ink on to a monotype plate. The seat was too high for the table\, and she looked very uncomfortable. In her own studio this artist painted standing up at an easel. It was then that I suggested affixing her monotype plate to a wall\, and since then\, this is her preferred approach to monotype printmaking. \nThis method has many advantages. While holding a brush not only can the artist work with the wrist but also can move the brush around from the shoulder. The ability to step back from the work at a distance is an added benefit especially if you turn your back to the plate and view your composition in a handheld mirror. This of course is how the plate will print. \nIn this workshop the walls will be protected with butcher paper and the plates attached to the walls at a comfortable height for each artist whether they prefer to work standing or seated. A 12 x 12 ins Plexiglas mirror will be available for each artist. \nRegister: \nhttps://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/event.jsp?event=499&

SUMMARY:Ziatype
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jessica Somers \nDate: April 22\, 2023 \nTime: 9AM – 5PM \nMember $ 247.50 \nNon- Member $ 275.00 \n Ziatype\, a modern alternative process\, perfected in 1980 by Richard Sullivan\, uses hand-painted emulsion and UV light to create a photographic image. The Ziatype process utilizes the “noble metal” palladium resulting in archival prints that yield a tonal range greater than traditional black and white papers. Additionally\, Ziatype chemistry can be adjusted to create varying hues from warm brown-black to cool grey-violet. In this workshop\, we will use digital negatives to print to the Ziatype process. Participants will be guided through the basics of exposing\, processing\, and controlling tone\, hue\, and contrast in the Ziatype process. At the conclusion of this workshop\, students will come away with a selection of their own Ziatype prints and will also be provided with written instructions\, a Ziatype supply list\, and a digital curve file for printing Ziatype negatives. \nRegister: \nhttps://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fivepointsarts/event.jsp?event=481&

SUMMARY:ANTHOTYPE WORKSHOP: FORAGE AND PRINT
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Anne Eder\n\nDate: Saturday\, May 6\, 2023 \nTime: 10 AM – 4 PM \nMember: $ 198.00 \nNon – Member: $ 220.00 \nThe medium of photography is not generally environmentally friendly\, but in this workshop\, participants will explore the wonderful and less toxic world of plant-based printing! Anthotypes are a nineteenth century process first explored by Sir John Herschel\, who also gave us cyanotypes and the word “photography”. There is not much that is more romantic or intriguing than using the natural light sensitivity of plants to create prints and seeing your images emerge from an emulsion of fragrant rose petals or nutritious chard! \nThe class will meet for a short presentation and create digital transparencies for the anthotype process. Participants will forage material from the many beautiful acres surrounding Five Points\, then come back and make plant sensitizers by extracting juice from the plants and coating papers. These take long exposures\, so anthotypes will be exposed and completed at home. Participants will meet the following week over zoom to discuss the results. \nRegistration:\nhttps://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/event.jsp?event=493&

SUMMARY:TDP Gallery - Nikko Sedgwick
DESCRIPTION:This series of mixed-media works is a meditation on the passage of time\, morality\, memory\, and interpersonal relationships. Sedgwick deconstructs and excavates his images revealing many layers. He melts the photo emulsion using various solvents as a way to paint within the photographs; he then combines various mediums including paint\, ink\, glitter\, and collaged materials to evoke an animation or aura within the image. Sedgwick states\, “Nothing makes our passage through time resonate with as much immediacy than seeing our children\, parents and loved ones being born\, aging and dying around us.” This manifestation of “life” within the images contradicts our conventional notions of a photograph distilling a moment in time.

SUMMARY:East Gallery - A View of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:East Gallery – A View of Humanity \nKaren Bonanno\, Camille Eskell\, Jennifer Knaus\, Gerald Saladyga \nThis group exhibition bridges a variety of styles of painting and sculpture that highlight the figure as the main subject and speaks to the many viewpoints and representations of identity that make up humanity. \n \nKaren Bonanno’s expressive paintings highlight interactions between the female figure and the empowerment of women. The paintings depict scenes from everyday life\, focusing on interactions between the subject and their environment. Bonanno’s bold color\, gestures\, and mark making represent the strong\, confident\, and iconic female figure. \n \nCamille Eskell’s Intricate textile sculptures examine cultural and family dynamics in relation to her Iraqi-Jewish heritage\, with themes of vulnerability\, rebirth\, gender relationships\, and social conventions. Eskell states\, “I tackle the impact of this social and psychological legacy mainly through a feminist lens.” The crafting of each piece is meticulous\, time-consuming\, and process-driven using a range of materials and techniques\, both traditional and contemporary. \n\nJennifer Knaus’ imaginary portraits draw inspiration from surrealist subconscious thought. Her acute attention to detail idealizes notions of beauty and importance that are embellished with humor and absurdity as entire gardens grow from her figures’ heads. \n\nGerald Saladyga’s stylized paintings combine a flattened sense of perspective\, along with the repetition of objects and characters. Saladyga states\, “It could be said that I “don’t paint” a painting\, but construct it from the bottom of the canvas upwards using various widths of tape to define the prescribed edges and shapes using a particular color scheme until completion.” His paintings also combine contemporary and historic war imagery\, as seen in his painting Two Saints Visit the Ukraine.

SUMMARY:West Gallery - Debra Weisberg
DESCRIPTION:The work of Debra Weisberg will be featured in the new exhibit\, Holding the Center Still: Redux. Comprising collaged paper works and a large-scale floor installation\, Weisberg’s richly dense body of work touches on the profound relationship between collapse and renewal. The work exposes the highly vulnerable nature of paper as a transparent and fragile medium that is also surprisingly enduring and sturdy. \nDuring the opening reception and final day of the show\, Brazilian choreographer\, Paula Higa\, will perform an interpretive dance in response to Weisberg’s work on June 9 at 7 pm and July 15 at 5 pm respectively. Higa’s performance adds a human element to the chaotic paper landscape\, connecting the visual and haptic senses to the materiality of the work. \nThis exhibition is supported in part by a grant from the Somerville Arts Council\, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council – Funding is also provided by the University of Vermont\, College of Arts and Sciences.

SUMMARY:Annex - Erika Larskaya
DESCRIPTION:PORTALS\nOpening Reception: June 23\, 6-8 PM\nFor her current exhibition\, Portals\, Erika Larskaya presents selected works from various series. Each work shares the common theme of opening to alternate spaces; spaces in parallel existence to this moment. Each painting is its own invitation to explore beyond the surface and enter into an invisible\, subtle\, and unexpressed territory\, where complexity\, impermanence\, and the mental struggle to balance emotional weight are present and where opposites can complement each other in dynamic coexistence.\nErika Larskaya of Torrington Connecticut is an abstract artist working in acrylics and mixed media. She is originally from St. Petersburg\, Russia. Erika brings a passion for experimentation and pushing boundaries to her work which has driven her to expand beyond the conventional. She has evolved her own methodology and technique – driven by her desire to express things that are not seen but rather felt.\n \nGallery Open: \nFridays 6-8 PM \nSaturdays: 4-8 PM \nSundays 1-4 PM \nand open by appointment \n
