SUMMARY:Opening Reception: In Dialogue\, She Spoke Up & Armed\, Alarmed
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, May 13\, 2022 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM\n  \nEAST GALLERY \nMargaret Roelke’s work explores sensationalism\, consumerism\, contradictions and the relationships that develop when popular culture mixes with war and religion. The exhibition Armed\, Alarmed is composed of two bodies of work that call for dialogue in urgent response to these concerns. Living near Sandy Hook Elementary School\, the site of a 2012 mass shooting\, Roelke was inspired to create sculptures made out of shotgun shells to raise awareness of gun violence and gun control. Roelke’s cyanotype images in this exhibition are attributed to the violent insurrection at the nation’s capital and the subject of peaceful versus violent protest. A percentage of all Margaret Roelke’s sales will be donated to organizations that work for gun control. \n  \nTDP GALLERY \nLinda Pearlman Karlsberg’s charcoaldrawings of famous women from throughout history acknowledge their contributions to society and encourage the viewer to contemplate a brighter future for all women. Each portrait is paired with a bird; birds symbolize freedom\, expansiveness\, keen vision\, and spirituality. Linda found their symbolism often uncannily mirrored the characteristics of each woman. \n  \nWEST GALLERY \nThe group exhibition In Dialogue features a spectrum of social justice issues such as economics\, politics\, gun and war violence. Participating artists include Jacob Cullers\, Jason Montgomery and Rita Valley \n Jacob Cullers \nThe imagery in Cullers’ mixed media paintings and sculpture refer to acts of violence that have occurred in America by white males. Using color to try to match the violence seems virtually impossible so Cullers often cuts into the paintings to try to convey the trauma. The artist’s use of found materials\, recognizable images and paint encourages the viewer to consider these issues in ways words alone cannot do.  Cullers’ states “I want to show the surface as a symbol of the history and the brutality of the American white male\, through the scope of conceptual painting.”  Cullers served in the United States Air Force and is an Iraq war veteran. \nJason Montgomery \nMontgomery’s work in this series he titled [de]RANGE seeks to draw attention to gun violence during the month of June 2021. These collaged based works act to engage and highlight the facts and potential solutions to the gun violence epidemic in the US. As an artist\, gun owner and a survivor of gun violence JRM fully recognizes the complexity of the issue and how deeply rooted it is in our culture. His writing and visual art bridge the aesthetics and feel of the early cubist collage movement and the Russian abstract movement of the 1920s. \nRita Valley \nValley is a textile-based artist whose work is fueled by her fascination with politics and social issues. Valley hand sews and embroiders bold statements dealing with issues of economics\, income disparity\, body image\, politics. The physical expression and labor in these pieces refer back to “women’s work” even as her subject matter addresses current topics that affect us all.  Bob Keating often collaborates with Valley by designing and forging hardware and accents for her finished work. \n  \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday\, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.\, Sunday\, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.\, and by appointment (860-618-7222). \n  \nThere is no admission charge. \nAll artwork is for sale. \nFive Points exhibitions and educational events are free and open to the public. \nFive Points Respects your masking preferences per CDC guidelines.

SUMMARY:Layered Woodcut Workshop with Jim Lee
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Lee \nDates: Saturdays\, April 30 – May 14 \nTime: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nWorkshop Description \nThis course will examine the bold and direct capabilities of woodcut and other relief print surfaces. It will take the student from preliminary sketches to the carving of blocks\, using the multiple block technique. By printing multiple layers of transparent inks\, images will develop with lush color relationships and luminous surfaces. We will work with color separation/registration\, carving with hand and power tools\, built-up surfaces\, color ink mixing\, and stencils. Monotype techniques will also be introduced and can be combined with the carved blocks. During the workshop students first develop a key block\, transfer the image to other blocks to carry various colors and then print small editions\, exploring color variations. Students should plan to arrive with several worked out compositions\, either representational or abstract. \nStudents do not need to have previous printmaking experience.

SUMMARY:Cyanotype: Wet and Traditional with Jill Enfield
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Information \nDates: April 25-26 \nTime: 10AM – 6 PM \nLocation: Five Points Arts Center Photo Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $375 \nClass Cap: 8 \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nWorkshop Description \nOne of the early photographic processes\, invented in 1842 by Sir John Hirschel\, was the cyanotype.  It is based on sunlight causing a change in a light sensitive emulsion brushed onto paper or fabric.  Many of the early photographic images were called “sun prints” because they had to be exposed using UV lights\, or sunlight. This is a contact print process and you will need negatives the size you would like your final image to be.   \nWe will start with learning how to make digital negatives and move on to making cyanotypes on watercolor paper or fabric. We will also explore working with photogram materials to use with wet cyanotypes and then toning. Discussions will be on best images\, paper\, fabrics\, and differences in chemical dilutions as well as toners. \n  \nRequired Materials \nThe Art Center will provide all cyanotype chemistry. Materials participants should bring: \n\nGloves and an apron\nMask\nBrushes\nWatercolor papers. Recommended papers to try: Hahnemuhle Platinum Rag\, Arches Platine\, Fabriano Acquarelle\, Clear Print Drafting Vellum or Strathmore Artist Plate Finish Drawing paper\, Cranes Kid Finish #32\, Parchment Wove #44\, Cot 320\n\n  \nInstructor Bio \nJill Enfield is a fine art photographer\, educator\, curator and author and has been teaching photography for many years with a concentration on historical techniques and alternative processes. Her three books: Photo Imaging: A Complete Guide To Alternative Processes published by Amphoto\, and\, Jill Enfield’s Guide to Alternative Processes: Popular Historical and Contemporary Techniques (First and Second Editions)\, published by Focal Press\, are award winning books\, and used in schools all over the world.  The books include step-by-step instructions on a variety of techniques including: wet plate collodion\, dry plate modern tintypes\, platinum and palladium printing\, cyanotypes\, liquid emulsion\, albumen printing\, hand painting and more.  \nJill’s work has also been chosen to be on book covers about these techniques and in magazines. Jill has podcasts and videos that can be seen on YouTube and other areas of the web. She has shown her work throughout the USA and Europe and had a one-woman show in 6 galleries on Ellis Island called THE NEW AMERICANS. A 3-minute video about the installation and the glass house made of old windows and portraits of recent immigrants can be seen by clicking on this link. The show then traveled with the Glasshouse of Immigrants featured at Photoville in DUMBO\, NYC and the Annenberg Center in LA\, and is still traveling to many cities throughout the USA. Enfield is looking for a permanent home for the glasshouse. \nEnfield has been teaching at Parsons The New School of Design since the late 1980’s and at many workshops throughout the world. Her fine art images can be seen in many museums around the world as well as in private collections.

SUMMARY:Native Voices
DESCRIPTION:The Native Voices group exhibition honors the talent\, history\, and voices of Indigenous artists and artists with indigenous lineage from across North America working with various content and media. \nParticipating artists include Nate Begay\, Patrick Collins\, Rebekah Jarvey\, and Jason Montgomery.  \nNate Begay \nUsing his history with graffiti art\, Begay incorporates bright\, bold colors\, often using spray paint markers in his paintings. He blends new styles with old-school imagery and symbols. Begay likes to vary his subject matter and incorporate important Navajo figures and animals into the paintings. Begay uses his artwork as a storytelling and teaching implement to educate viewers on Navajo identity and culture. \nPatrick Collins \nCollins’ intricately drawn pastel portraits use bright colors that reflect the beauty of his culture while capturing the iconic personalities of his subjects. His paintings also emphasize the many issues Native Americans struggle with\, in contemporary society. Collins adds cultural symbols and metal leafing to highlight the stories told through the Anishinaabe (Original People).  \nRebekah Jarvey \nRebekah Jarvey is a self-proclaimed indigenous fashionista. Her Art/Fashion career took off during the pandemic after her Flashy Night & Day mask went viral on social media attracting people and publications from around the world. She mixes traditional tribal heritage with her crafting skills and the fashions of today to create modern\, urban\, and authentic masks and ribbon skirts with her signature hashtag #RibbonDrip. Jarvey’s goal is to convey to the Indigenous community the importance of knowing their families’ customs and traditions.  \nJason Montgomery \nJason’s work engages the cross-section of identity\, cultural hybridization\, post-colonial reconstruction\, and political agency. His writing and visual art bridge the aesthetics and feel of the early cubist collage movement and the Russian abstract movement of the 1920s with living and historical Native/Indigenous Californian and Chicano art traditions.

Creating organic branch-like sculptures\, maintaining an awareness of the human footprint on our land\, water systems\, and atmosphere. \nNancy Hayes creates intricately painted imagined worlds. Hayes’ highly organized imagined ecosystems are dependent on how her brain organizes space\, pattern\, color\, and form. \nSusan Sharp’s assemblage series is comprised of panels utilizing different sizes\, colors\, and in some cases different depths and shapes. Both organic and geometric forms coexist in a world that is in continuous motion. Color\, both intense and muted\, as well as linear elements\, weave in and out of the panels. \nLisa Warren’s Galaxy Garden paintings include abstract and representational elements. Her use of shape\, color\, and mark-making emphasize the emotional communication we all encounter in our own heads when exploring the world and our relationships with it. \nJoan Wheeler’s work creates conversations about humans and their relationship with the environment throughout history and the present day. Focusing on flora and fauna\, and the hybridization between the two.

SUMMARY:Real and Imagined
DESCRIPTION:Five Points Gallery\, located at 33 Main St. in downtown Torrington\, presents Real & Imagined\, an exhibition in the West and TDP Galleries\, featuring five artists from across the state and region. \n  \nWhen: February 18\,  – March 26\, 2022  \nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 18\, 5:00 – 8:00p.m.  \n  \nReal & Imagined explores dualities in the relationships of patterns and colors from the natural and imagined worlds. \nTamara Dimitri’s work speaks to the variations of the environments she’s lived in throughout her life. Drawing from the history of these regions\, she creates organic branch-like sculptures maintaining an awareness of the human footprint on our land\, water systems\, and atmosphere. She combines traditional and recycled materials such as old texts from geology books and wire. Her work reflects a new world\, created from pieces of our own. \nNancy Hayes\, of South Dartmouth\, Mass. creates intricately painted worlds of an imagined location\, speaking to how her brain organizes space\, pattern\, color\, and form. She depicts highly organized ecosystems where each part is dependent on the whole while going deeper into its texture and biology. \nSusan Sharp’s assemblage series is composed of interconnected panels of different sizes\, color and in some cases different depths and shapes. Exploring Duality\, themes are organic and geometric. Colors are intense and mute\, pieces are large and small; all exist in a world that is constantly adjusting and moving.  \nLisa Warren’s Galaxy Garden paintings combine elements both abstract and representational. She creates elements of swirling pattern\, texture\, and color and her use of shapes or color in different dots and dashes emphasizes the emotional communication we all encounter in our own heads when exploring the world and our relationships –  as if seeing a garden within a galaxy. \nJoan Wheeler creates a conversation about the world that we live in and the relationship between humans and their environments throughout history and today. Featuring a focus on flora and fauna\, the undeniable blending of humans and nature can be found in her textile work. \n

SUMMARY:Monotype Workshop with Anthony Kirk
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Anthony Kirk \nDates: Saturday\, January 22\, 2022 \nTime: 10AM –  2PM \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nWorkshop Description \nAnthony Kirk will lead a three-hour workshop where participants will investigate several methods of creating and printing monotypes. We will be printing with and without a press and also print from a freshly printed impression. Known as a counterproof\, this enables the artist to see their print in the orientation that it was made on the plate and not the mirror image. Without reworking the pate with added ink\, a second or “ghost” impression can also be pulled. Usually a brush technique where ink is applied to the plate in an additive way\, the ink can also be rolled on the plate with brayers and then removed with rags and Q-tips. This is known as a reductive monotype. \nOften referred to as “the painterly print”\, monotypes can also be a drawing process whereby a thin layer of ink is rolled onto the plate\, paper is then laid over the plate and the artist then draws on the paper. By varying the hand pressure and variety of sharpness or bluntness of the drawing tool\, ink is transferred to the paper accordingly. This technique is commonly known as transfer or trace monotype and Paul Klee was an exponent of this process. He referred to this body of work as “transfer drawings”. \nNon-toxic inks and water-soluble crayons will be used in a fume free environment where the clean up solvent is Dawn detergent and water. Space is limited to 12 participants and a fee of $30 per person will cover all material costs. \nParticipants will be printing from plate sizes 11 x 14 ins. and 18 x 24 ins on paper measuring 15 x 22 ins. and 22 x 30 ins.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Bob Chaplin\, Susan Hoffman Fishman & Jennifer Sabella
DESCRIPTION:Join Five Points for a Virtual Artist Talk featuring artists Bob Chaplin\, Susan Hoffman Fishman & Jennifer Sabella on Friday\, December 03\, at 6:00PM. \n  \nModerated by artist Jessica Fallis. \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nThe talk will give viewers a deeper look into the artists’ exhibitions\, their artistic process and general background in the arts. \n  \nBob Chaplin’s exhibition “Hortophilia” consists of concept drawings of his Woodland-Meadow Parterre installation on the grounds of Five Points Art Center in Torrington\, CT among other Parterre installations across the globe. Chaplin hopes to inspire a dialogue about the apparent chaos of nature and man’s preoccupation with trying to structure and tame the natural world. \n  \nSusan Hoffman Fishman’s paintings represent an abstract and liberal interpretation of what scientists have determined actually happened at the creation of the planet and for the billions of years that followed. The installation of 39 paintings on paper each measuring 30 inches by 15 inches are shown together as a running narrative that wraps the gallery walls. \n  \nJennifer Sabella’s exhibition consists of two bodies of work\, drip and landscape paintings. The vibrant drips or color stream paintings layer hues of gravity-driven paint in these large format\, striped paintings which vibrate with intensity. Her landscape paintings\, on the other hand\, are created through multiple layers of give and take; paint is excavated as she scrapes into the surfaces creating highly texturized\, rich surfaces imbuing an energy or life. \n  \nJessica Fallis is a Torrington\, CT based artist\, educator\, and writer. Her work explores themes related to the environment\, time\, and memory. Her work has been displayed throughout Connecticut\, including the New Britain Museum of American Art\, Five Points Gallery\, The Mystic Museum of Art\, and the West Hartford Art League. She is currently a member of the Five Points Launchpad in Torrington\, CT. Jessica is also a full time art teacher in West Hartford.

SUMMARY:Layered Woodcut Workshop with Jim Lee
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Information\nDates: Saturdays\, October 23 – November 6 \nTime: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM \nLocation: Five Points Arts Center Print Lab \nAges: 18+ \nCost: $400 \nClass Cap: 8 \n  \nEvent Link: \nhttps://fivepointsarts.app.neoncrm.com/np/clients/fivepointsarts/event.jsp?event=26& \n  \nWorkshop Description\nThis course will examine the bold and direct capabilities of woodcut and other relief print surfaces. \nStudents do not need to have previous printmaking experience\, but this would certainly be an advantage. I can adapt this to any level of experience. \n  \nRequired Materials\nSee link here. \n  \nInstructor Bio\nJim Lee was born in Kansas and received a M.F.A. in printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980. He taught printmaking\, drawing and book arts at the Hartford Art School/University of Hartford\, West Hartford\, CT from 1982 -2020.  \nLandscape is at the core of his work. He often begins a series with on-site drawings and watercolors\, and from these develops his color reduction woodcut prints. Recent work has been based on the west coast of Ireland\, Maine and Maritime Canada.  \n  \nA selection of Jim Lee’s recent exhibitions include:\n\nSolo: University of Alaska\, Anchorage\, AK-2019; Bromer Gallery\, Boston\, MA-2019; University of Wisconsin-Madison\, WI-2019; Five Points Gallery\, Torrington\, CT-2014; Group: Atlanta Print Biennial International Juried Exhibition\, Atlanta\, GA-2017; The Boston Printmakers International Biennial-2017; Imprint One\, National Invitational Print Exhibition\, Austin\, TX-2016; Stand Out Prints\, International Juried Print Exhibition\, Minneapolis\, MN\, 2016; Yinchuan Conversation: Chinese & American Printmakers\, Yinchuan Art Center\, Ningxia\, China-2016; IPCNY New Prints/Summer Show\, NY- 2014.  \nHis collections include: The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, The National Portrait Gallery\, The Getty Art Center\, The Wadsworth Athenaeum\, The Art Institute of Chicago\, The Museum of Fine Arts-Boston\, The Guangdong Museum of Fine Arts-Chongqing\, China\, The New York Public Library\, University of San Francisco\, and Bibliotheca Liborium Artificem\, Sydney\, Australia.

SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Talk: Richter & Morris
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Artist Talk on Friday\, October 22nd\, at 6:00PM EST \nRegister for free at the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_-R7wORUqQjyv7aXrhwle-A \nModerated by Power Boothe. Power Boothe has exhibited his paintings for over four decades. His work is represented in numerous public and private collections and he teaches at the Hartford Art School. \nThe East Gallery features mixed media works by Scott Richter\, in his exhibition “A Melody of Things Unrelated” groups works from multiple series emphasizing the artist’s layered and thoughtful approach to process. The Sculptural works within this show are actually considered to be paintings in the artist’s mind. They are pieces are about painting – the process and its material\, yet avoiding the final product and its related aesthetics. Each piece comments on the repetitive nature of the painting process – building mountains of paint showing the layers and history of the process. Richter’s two dimensional work also speaks to the methodology of process by layering\, burying and revealing surfaces. \nSydney Morris’ solo exhibition “Nova”\, will exhibit her alternative process photographs in the TDP Gallery. The alternative processed photos are printed on cloth and presented in embroidery hoops – as a metaphor for the stars in the night sky. Morris notes that these pieces are unique in the fact that they are ever changing. Much like a nova\, their colors may change\, become brighter\, or slowly fade over time. The forms created in these pieces mirror celestial events through photographic alchemy to produce fluid\, saturated pieces infused with meaning.
