Excavations
Art does not reproduce what we see; rather it makes us see.
-Paul Klee, 20th century Swiss-born German artist
The paintings on view here were selected from my series Excavations, a body of work that I began several years ago. The paintings are about some of the most salient things in my life. The subject matter is wide-ranging: the joy of music and experiencing the evolution of a single song; climate change dangers and the beauty of nature; social and political threats to democracy; Alzheimer’s ever-tightening grasp, the insidious nature of bi-polar’s touch and the shining graceful and courageous light of a soul navigating such things.
The title Excavations refers to how a painting is made and how the process itself can reveal to me its subject and its theme. I begin with no preconceived ideas, working freely until I get a glimpse of where I might take the painting. At some point, as I add, remove, manipulate layers of color and marks and gestures, I see more clearly what that painting is going to be about and work towards that idea.
