In answer to the growing needs of art school graduates, and to encourage the cross pollination of ideas, The Launchpad, a strategic partnership with Hartford Art School, University of Hartford was formed in 2016. Emerging artists who have been severed from the umbilical connection of guidance, direction, community and art facilities found in a degree program, often face an uncertain future that, for the most part, has to be negotiated independently. Often working in their parents’ basements or garages, many promising young artists find themselves isolated without intellectual and creative stimulation. The Launchpad program offers participants access to affordable shared studio spaces above Five Points Gallery, free access to the Art Center, a serious arts community, mentorship, exhibition and gallery management opportunities, as well as a biennial exhibition in Five Points Gallery.

“Once I heard about the new Launchpad Program during my senior year of college, I was elated! I was terrified of the idea of not having some of the resources I utilized at the Hartford Art School [after graduation]. Especially equipment, like an inkjet printer and film negative scanner, that I otherwise would not be able to afford. It allowed me to continue to grow my practice on my own terms with more freedom than school. The Launchpad also allowed me to grow my network of connections beyond the Hartford Art School. I met curators and other artists. Those connections have given me to many opportunities I would not have had otherwise. The Launchpad was the perfect opportunity for me to jump start my career post-undergrad. It gave me the confidence an artist needs to start off as a professional artist.”
“Participating in Five Points Launchpad Program has been an amazing experience. Not only have I met other impressive emerging artists, but it is so vital to me to have my own space to create my work. Having a space solely dedicated to creating artwork enhances my productivity and creativity.
Participating in Five Points events has helped me meet other artists, and given me opportunities I never would receive otherwise. I've been able to learn from more established artists, as well as make connections that have enhanced my own career. I feel immersed in a community that supports artists and lifts them up to greater potential.”
“Being a part of the Five Points Launchpad program has shown me a clearer career path in the arts after graduating from the Hartford Art School in 2017. After graduation, I was isolated from the artist community I was lucky to be a part of at school. Being accepted into the LP program gave me hope and encouragement to make my art practice fit into and around my career path, and not the other way around. It happened organically. Shortly after I was accepted into the Launchpad, I was laid off from my part time retail job. But not long after, Judy recommended me to the Northwest Connecticut Arts Council, and I started working as their Program Coordinator. This chain of events led me to my first solo show at the Souterrain Gallery in West Cornwall in August, 2018. About a year later, I was offered the Marketing Coordinator position at Five Points, too. I would not be where I am in my career without the support of Five Points and everyone involved.”
"Through the Launchpad, I’ve become connected to a network of artists that inspire me to push forward, to collaborate, and to support the arts in a vibrant community. It has connected me with professionals and has propelled me forward into more than one prestigious job opportunity. It has taught me invaluable lessons about managing a gallery, preparing for exhibitions, skills such as networking, writing press releases, planning and executing community events, fundraising, and so much more. Not only has the Launchpad spring-boarded my professional growth, but it has also vastly improved my artistic process. I would never have explored the work I am creating now without the advice of my Launchpad peers. This program is the linchpin to a constant flow of creativity and routine that continues to nurture my artistic growth. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the Launchpad, and I’m absolutely certain my peers would echo my sentiments."
