Etty Yaniv: Wavering Vistas
The title Wavering Vistas suggests a landscape in flux, perhaps shaped by atmospheric conditions, such as heat, haze, and mist, as well as the interplay of light, perspectives, and ideas. The series of my small-scale paintings resemble vignettes out of my large-scale installations. These paintings, primarily acrylic with elements of collage, ink, and silk, encapsulate, through tactility, composition, and color, universes of detail within their intimate dimensions. I strive for the coexistence of contrasts—glossy and matte, opaque and transparent, dense and sparse—interplay with dynamic tension. The imagery, while imaginary, is deeply rooted in specific places and states of mind: from my residencies at MASS MOCA in North Adams, MA, and the Golden Foundation in New Berlin, NY, to the Venice Lagoon in Italy and periods of COVID isolation. These experiences shape the thematic and material choices in my work, reflecting a blend of the real and the envisioned.
