Artist Statement
Strong work is birthed from intimate familiarity. Where I live and work inherently influences my imagery acting as a sub-narrative. These are added to my ongoing narrative themes I have been refining over the past 35 years. Themes echo my interest in understanding ‘what it means to be human’ whereby I often explore making invisible concepts visible: people in the act of thinking, narratives wherein something is hidden or revealed, and daily cycles of life against longer cycles of geologic time. By infusing the making of the art into the art, I capture a specific ‘moment in time’ that contrasts deep rhythms and underlying forces. My desire, conceptually parallel to different tempos of time outlined by historian Fernand Braudel, is to capture these human moments within the larger context of universal humanity.
Short Biography
Born, raised, and schooled in the Midwest my work will always reflect historical and cultural threads to the region. My teaching career took me to the West and the South, which gave me a plethora new visual and narrative information to work with. My studio work is narrative. Based around the figure, my work manifests itself in the media that has the greatest visual punch for the idea. I currently lead an active studio life which fluidly crosses out of prints into book-arts, drawing, painting, and ceramic sculpture.
