Juror:

Jill Enfield is based out of the Hudson Valley in New York State. She is the author of three books on alternative photographic processes and teaches workshops throughout the world on the subject. Enfield’s work is part of many museum and private collections including the Amon Carter Museum in Dallas, Texas, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, MO and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France. Her wet collodion portraits and Glasshouse of Immigrants was featured at the Ellis Island Museum and Photoville in DUMBO, NY and the Annenberg Center of Photography in LA.

Juror’s Pick for Best in Show:

It’s a beautiful pastel portrait with a rich, tactile surface that captures both light and mood in a striking way. The man is slightly off to the side, not centered, which gives the composition a quiet, contemplative energy. His facial features aren’t sharply defined, but the suggestion is enough — you can still make out who he is, or at least feel a strong sense of his presence. The way the pastels are blended gives his face and figure a soft, almost glowing quality, as if he’s standing in sunlight. The colors are warm and inviting, with gentle transitions between shadow and light that add depth without harsh lines. I love how the lack of detail feels intentional — it lets the light and color do the storytelling, creating a portrait that’s both evocative and open to interpretation.
