I have an insatiable interest in materials—natural, synthetic, domestic, and industrial, as well as, an affinity for their endless juxtaposition. My process is intuitive, requiring preliminary experimentation and manipulation of materials and found objects.  In short, I play with fibers, detritus, and light.

After decades of sewing and constructing forms of cotton rag paper, I’ve newly discovered the medium of wax paper. Despite the technical challenges that sewing this household paper presents due to its fragile, brittle and unyielding nature, I continue to be drawn to this unremarkable paper’s remarkably poetic qualities.  Most recently, I’ve begun to employ the elements of light, shadow and video in order to animate and to dramatize my installations and constructions.  But certainly, it is wax paper’s inherent fragility, translucency, disposability, and ethereal constitution that contribute most intrinsically to the metaphor and meaning of the final works.

When I’m fortunate, my intuitive process results in introspective, metaphorical work highlighting the rigors and rituals of human relationships– especially as seen through the mature female gaze.  I’m currently at work on the collection, A Woman of a Certain Age– a project that intends to upend this politically correct label and to counter biases of mature female beauty, sexuality, power, and purpose. While definitely emanating from an autobiographical and deeply personal place, I intend that the resulting works inspire much-needed dialogue filtered by the rich and diverse experiences of viewers of every gender, culture, identity or age.
